Job Advert: Duty Manager

The Role:

We are looking for a motivated, personable and reliable part-time Duty Manager to join our events team during our busy Autumn and Christmas season, with the potential to become a permanent position.

At the Bristol Improv Theatre, we deliver a diverse range of programming, from local improv groups to experimental theatre, burlesque nights and circus troupes! 

We are a small, independent and artist-led theatre that’s passionate about delivering excellent service and maintaining our reputation as one of the friendliest venues in Bristol. 

In this role you will lead a front of house team, overseeing our events bar, theatre, and other venue spaces, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of clients, audiences and production teams. A successful applicant will be able to remain assertive and calm in a busy environment while providing warm and welcoming service.

Hours and Pay

Rate of pay : £12.20 per hour

Hours: Part-time, Friday and Saturday evenings (5:30pm until closing) with option for additional hours depending on theatre schedule. Some additional hours may be paid at a lower rate of £12 per hour and carry fewer responsibilities.

Start date: As soon as possible.

Main duties

  • Representing the theatre during events and upholding the theatre’s reputation for being friendly and welcoming.
  • Managing the front of house team and providing basic training to volunteers.
  • Making sure events run on time and according to their itineraries.
  • Enforcing theatre policy as well as monitoring and enforcing health and safety practices and regulations during events.
  • Promoting the Bristol Improv Theatre and upselling its events and bar offerings.
  • Overseeing our bar during events, reporting financial earnings, monitoring stock levels, and ensuring appropriate close downs of the venue according to health & safety and hygiene practices.
  • Working with the box office and tech teams to ensure events run smoothly.
  • Welcoming visiting performers and venue hire clients, and delivering critical information about facilities and fire safety.
  • Keyholding responsibilities for the venue, including opening and closing checks.
  • Preparing the venue for an event and ensuring the venue is safe, welcoming, clean, and set up as specified.
  • Being the appointed person for leading on first aid and any incidents or evacuations.
  • Reporting and recording incidents and maintenance issues that arise during events.
  • Positively and proactively responding to customer needs and enquiries, including resolving difficult situations and complaints where appropriate.
  • Physical tasks such as bringing in deliveries and moving set pieces, props, and equipment (some manual handling required, with training provided).

Person Specification

Required:

  • Confident in providing a calm, personalised and high level of customer service
  • Proactive and able to maintain composure in busy environments
  • Experience in a hospitality and customer facing role
  • Reliable and conscientious 
  • Experience in conflict resolution and customer service
  • Verbal communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team
  • Previous experience as a keyholder for a building, venue, or business
  • Time management skills
  • Leadership skills and ability to be assertive when necessary
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Comfortable in manual handling and working from heights (training will be provided)

Desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience in a management role 
  • Technical/AV experience
  • Experience working behind a bar
  • First aid training
  • Interest in theatre and events

We understand it can be very difficult to break into the arts.  Although some experience in a management role is desirable, training will be provided on the job and we encourage anyone who is passionate about working in events to apply, regardless of experience.
