Audition Call Out: This Is Your Panto!
The Bristol Improv Theatre has once again teamed up with the creative team behind Bristol’s number one improvised musical, This Is Your Musical, to produce a brand new musical improv show for the Christmas season: This Is Your Panto!
And you could be part of it…
This Is Your Panto! will combine the expertise and experience of Anna Kemp and Ian Towers, Artistic Director and Musical Director respectively of This Is Your Musical, with the community vision and producing skills of the Bristol Improv Theatre’s artistic team. The production will create an opportunity for performers to gain experience of musical improv as part of a short-term project, creating a magical experience for the Bristol Improv Theatre’s audiences this Christmas.
The Bristol Improv Theatre is holding auditions for This Is Your Panto! on Sunday 30th August. We strongly encourage members of the improv community in Bristol to apply.
Interested in applying? Please read the information below:
What is the show?
This Is Your Panto! is a fully improvised narrative musical in the style of a classic pantomime, supported with musical accompaniment. This means that the performers make up everything – characters, plot, dialogue, and song lyrics – throughout the show. It is a 2 act show with an interval.
The evening shows are aimed at an adult audience, and there is a family friendly matinee which is aimed at a family audience. The show aims to get the audience laughing, gasping, and even singing along.
What are you looking for at the auditions?
We are looking for people who will be able to improvise on stage, working as a team to build a narrative and improvise musical numbers. The ability to multi-roll and differentiate between characters is helpful.
Whilst we are looking for people who have the ability to improvise, sing, and improvise songs, you don’t need to be super experienced at all of these as Anna and Ian will work with you and teach you all you need to know in order to create an improvised musical format. The purpose of this production is to bring on new talent, so please still apply if you haven’t performed musical improv on stage before.
We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, good at collaborating with and listening to others, and are supportive of others.
What will the auditions involve?
The auditions will involve a short check in and welcome from the Directors, a warm up, and then the set up of improvised scenes and songs.. We will also ask you to sing a prepared song of your choice either in front of the group or privately for Ian/Anna.
Depending on the numbers we have on the day, we may call you back for a second audition later on the same day.
What is the commitment and is it paid?
We are looking for people who can make all of the show dates as well as the Tech and Dress Rehearsals, and who can make most of the other rehearsal dates (at least 8 out of the 10 dates ideally). These dates are listed below along with the Audition dates and times.
The production is paid on a profit split, we anticipate that this will mean performers are paid between £45 and £50 per show, with each performer doing a minimum of 4 shows.
We recognise that these rates do not match up with professional rates, this reflects that this is a show aiming to create opportunities for amateurs in our community with a short run of performances. The Bristol Improv Theatre is not in receipt of any grant funding for this production, and continues to keep its ticket prices as low as possible to make its shows accessible for audiences.
Auditions, Rehearsals and Shows will take place at the Bristol Improv Theatre. See our website for information on getting here.
