SUMMARY:Improv Drop-ins
DESCRIPTION:Mondays | 19:30 – 21:30\nLooking to stretch your improvising muscles? Then our drop-ins are for you! \nOur drop-ins run every Monday evening and alternate between scene workshops and classes focused on specific skills to help you pad out your improvisers tool-kit. \nDuring our scene workshops\, you’ll receive supportive and constructive side-coaching\, tailored to the group and designed to develop your confidence and improvisation skills. On the other hand\, the regular drop-ins will take a specific skill and explore it through games\, exercises and scenes. \nFacilitated by an experienced Bristol Improv Theatre instructor\, drop-ins are a great chance to try improv at Bristol Improv Theatre and connect with others. \nAny questions\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at hello@improvtheatre.net. \nIf you are brand new to improv\, you may prefer to try the monthly Improv Taster Session. \nOur Improv Drop-Ins are very popular classes which regularly sell out. We would always recommend booking your place in advance in order to secure your spot. Whilst we do occasionally have drop outs and availability on the day\, we would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n  \nIs cost a barrier to access for you? If so\, please check out our Pay It Forward Scheme >

SUMMARY:Make the Audience Care - with Maria Peters
DESCRIPTION:25th September – 30th October | Wednesdays | 19:00 – 21:30\nPlease note: the first session of the course (Wed 25th Sept) will take place at Bristol Subud Hall\, 29 Wesley Pl\, Clifton\, Bristol\, BS8 2YD. \nThis is a twenty minute walk from the theatre\, at the top of Whiteladies Road\, with the most convenient parking being in the Clifton Down Shopping Centre. \nSessions after this will take place as normal at The Bristol Improv Theatre. \nIf you’ve ever watched an improv show you’ll know that some scenes make you lean in and hang off every word and some other scenes… Well they make you wonder if you can get away with discreetly checking your phone. \nWhat is the difference? That’s exactly what this course covers. Over 6 sessions this brand new course of workshops explores the different ways we can toy with making our audiences care. These classes will be filled with exercises and scenes experimenting with different characters\, their choices\, and relationships. \nEach session will involve improvised scene-work\, side coaching\, as well as checking in with the audience to gauge real time feedback. We’ll be exploring questions like: \n\nWhat makes the audience care if characters or relationships succeed?\nWhat makes the audience delighted to witness a scene rather than feel they are doing the improvisers a favour?\nWhat makes some scenes electric with authenticity and others feel like you are watching people pretending to be humans?\n\nThis course is aimed at intermediate level improvisers\, i.e. you’ve performed in front of an audience and feel comfortable with general scene-work.\nPlease note: These workshops are not suitable for beginners who are brand new to improvisation. \n\n \n \n \n \nAbout the Instructor\nWhen not improvising in London (at the The Comedy Store with Paul Merton & Suki Webster’s Impro Show\, or playing with the Yes Queens female improv supergroup or legendary duo Breaking and Entering) Maria performs locally with Bristol’s This Is Your Musical. \nShe’s been invited to perform at improv festivals internationally\, including Estonia\, Ireland\, Italy\, The Netherlands\, Portugal & The United States. A lot of her expertise has also been gathered from world-class instructors over the years\, studying with: Charna Halpern\, author of Truth in Comedy\, who originally developed The Harold with Del Close; Keith Johnstone; New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade; and The Second City and iO Chicago in Chicago. \nOn top of nearly 15 years of improvising\, Maria is also a world class facilitator. Her varied career encompasses Professional Development Training and Learning Workshop Design which means she’s an expert in passing on knowledge in interactive & engaging ways.\nMaria creates friendly and relaxed environments to learn in and believes in giving her students all the tools possible to find the JOY of improv for players and the audience alike.

SUMMARY:The Awkward Guide to Friendship
DESCRIPTION:Friday 27th September | 20:00 (doors open 19:30)\nHouse of Figs presents: The Awkward Guide to Friendship \n– Does the cat get your tongue when you’re meeting new people? \n– Does it take a while to get to know you? \n– Do you wander lonely as a cloud? \n– Are you still trying to believe that you belong\, even surrounded by friends? \nThen climb aboard… \nHouse of Figs bring you their new work navigating the choppy waters of friendship\, from perfectly platonic meet-cutes to courageous conversations… and beyond. Join poet Beth Calverley and musician Beth Roberts on a voyage through deep friendship feelings\, safely afloat in an otherworldly choir of spoken and sung voices. \nThe Awkward Guide to Friendship traces the tale of Beth & Beth’s friendship\, interspersing the duo’s own experiences of loneliness and connection with voice notes of other people talking about friendship\, original songs and immersive soundscapes. Along the way\, they invite their new friends (you!) to help inspire some live improvisations and join in with collective singing – though quiet listening is equally welcomed. \nPraise for House of Figs: \n“The definition of wholesome fun” – Shambala audience member \n“Hypnotic… radiates tenderness and awe” – Sabotage Reviews \n“One of those truly exciting creative moments where I feel a more complete\, more feeling\, more alive person for having experienced your thoughts & words.” – Awkward Guide audience member \n\n\nAbout House of Figs:\nHouse of Figs is a collaboration between Beth Calverley (The Poetry Machine) and Beth Roberts (Hands of the Heron / Hedera / Tryani Collective). Beth and Beth hold parallel roles as Poet and Musician in Residence for their local NHS Trust. From hospitals to festivals\, they create a held space wherever they perform\, illuminating the value of care for ourselves and others. They have headlined events at Lyra Bristol Poetry Festival and Komedia Bath\, and performed at Shambala\, HowTheLightGetsIn\, Green Man\, WOMAD\, Good Grief and Bristol Harbour Festival.  \nIn 2023\, the duo shared their multifaceted\, ADHD-fuelled work-in-progress and (to their relief)\, found that it deeply resonated with audiences in the moment of performance and long after the show. Since then\, the duo have honed their tangle of tangents into a powerful gig theatre piece\, with a mission that no-one will ever again think: “everyone finds friendship easier than I do.” \nFollow them @ourhouseoffigs \n  \nPhoto credit: Paul Blakemore
