SUMMARY:Mockumentary Now with Chris Mead
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 13th- Saturday 17th August | 10:00 – 17:00 (plus 20:00 – 22:00 on Saturday 17th)\nMockumentaries are documentaries where the world and characters presented are exaggerated versions of reality. \nImprov and mockumentaries have a long and storied history together. In fact\, a free-wheeling improvisational style fits the tone of the form perfectly. Over the years\, such improv luminaries as Christopher Guest\, Eugene Levy\, Amy Poehler and Steve Carell have all used their training to hilarious effect in mockumentary films and TV shows. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore how to put them on stage. We’ll look at everything from the Christopher Guest cannon\, through the US version of The Office and Parks & Recreation\, to existing improv formats like The Documentary developed by Billy Merritt. \nThis course will help you develop the following improv skills: Characters\, interview-style monologues\, relationship\, subtext\, narrative\, narration \nThis week-long intensive (Tuesday to Saturday) will culminate in a performance by the students on Saturday 17th August of the Mockumentary format where the topic is chosen by the audience!* \n*If you want to do the course but you’re not sure about performing\, you’re still welcome to join. Feel free to get in touch with Chris or the Bristol Improv Theatre beforehand if you have any questions. \nAbout the Instructor\nChris Mead is an improviser\, writer and creative who lives in the beautiful Surrey Hills with his wife\, Laura and his cavapoo dog-pal\, Radio. \nHis focus is on emotionally-connected\, relationship-driven improv. He is lucky enough to teach and perform all over the world. Chris studied theatre at the prestigious Royal Holloway college and continues to explore improv with every school\, theatre and practitioner he can find.

SUMMARY:The Jazz Club
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 18th August | 19:00 \nIMPROMPTWO presents THE JAZZ CLUB\nPicture this: It’s the mid-1940s\, just as the war is ending. We’re in a lower-class jazz club in New York\, where the vibe is hopeful for new beginnings – or is that optimism misguided? Join ImprompTwo\, a duo favorite at festivals around the world\, as they create a show filled with regrets\, passion ignited (or perhaps denied)\, and beautiful silences\, all set within a world that is trying to find itself again. Come join us as we listen to live jazz\, and maybe the secrets others share with us. \nAbout ImprompTwo\nImprompTwo has been performing at improv festivals around the world for seven years\, including Sweden (SWIMP\, Goteburg)\, England (Robin Hood – 2022\, 2023\, 2024)\, Paris\, Oslo (SNIF 2024)\, and across the US (South Carolina\, LA\, Baton Rouge\, Miami\, Tampa\, Chicago\, Nashville\, and more)\, and in Canada. Both members of ImprompTwo bring years of experience in producing and performing theatre in New York and Canada\, and bring that sensibility to their improv scenes\, which are known for beautiful silences\, quick banter\, and passion. Joe is a professional actor and was formerly AD of Firedrake Productions in NY. Kathy is a published and produced playwright in NY and Toronto. They have studied with many of the leading improvisers in the world\, including Susan Messing\, David Razowsky\, Impro Theatre LA\, Mark Phoenix\, Tony Reliage\, Craig and Carla Cackowski\, and their coach Gael Dooneweerd-Perry (Amsterdam) to name a few. \nThis show will take place in the Bar of the Bristol Improv Theatre.
