SUMMARY:Intro to Performing Improv
DESCRIPTION:22nd July – 26th August | Mondays | 19:00 – 21:30\nImprovisation happens all over the place: at work\, at home\, when you’re messing around with your mates. Whenever you do something that you didn’t plan in advance\, try something just to have a go\, or join in with something that looks fun – you’re improvising!  \nBut what about improvising in front of people on a stage? Improv as a performance can be a scary prospect\, but it can also be tremendously fun and hugely rewarding! \nFollowing on from our hugely popular Discovering Improv course\, this six-week course will immerse you in the fundamentals of improvising for an audience through games\, exercises\, and scenes. Our experienced facilitators will guide and support you on your journey towards performing. \nIs this course for me? \nIntro to Performing is an introduction to improvisation as a performance artform\, aimed at beginners. No experience is required. This is the course for you if; \n\nYou’ve completed our Discovering Improv course and want to take the next step\nYou’re new to improv and want to learn the fundamentals of improvisation for an audience\nYou learned improv elsewhere and want to start learning with the Bristol Improv Theatre School\n\n\n \n \n \n \nClass Details\nThis is a 6-week course\, capped at 16 participants\, plus up to 2 instructors (18 in total). \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about the classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net. \nPrice changes to our courses\nLike many other small\, independent businesses\, over the past year the cost of running our venue has increased significantly. This has included increased utility bills and higher staff wages to ensure we maintain our Living Wage employer status by complying with the increase in the National Living Wage. Whilst we have undertaken an array of cost-saving measures throughout last year\, we need to implement a small price increase to our courses to be able to continue operating with the increased costs that we are facing. \nOne of our primary aims at the Bristol Improv Theatre is making improv accessible to as many people as possible. But it is also important to us that our team are paid fairly and that we can ensure the longevity of the theatre. We are continually looking and applying for funding to support our work and we hugely value the support from our audiences\, students and supporters\, whether that’s in the form of donating to the theatre\, buying tickets to our events or talking about our work with friends and family. \nIf the increase in price is a barrier for you\, please check out our Pay It Forward scheme or drop us an email at hello@improvtheatre.net. We’re always here to listen and provide as much support as we are able to

SUMMARY:Performing Improv Level 1: Telling Stories
DESCRIPTION:22nd July – 2nd September | Mondays | 19:00 – 21:30\nStories and storytelling are a fundamental part of the human experience. We shape the world around us into narratives that we can understand\, forming deep emotional connections to the tales that resonate with us. A keen improviser can play on this narrative instinct to craft engaging stories on the fly and leave a delighted audience asking ‘How did they do that!?’ \nThis seven-week course combines techniques inspired by legendary improviser Keith Johnstone and Pixar Animation Studios to equip students with a formidable toolkit of storytelling techniques and skills. From confidence and communication skills to knowing how to make bold choices to keep the story alive (or deliver a surprising twist ending)\, you’ll train the narrative instincts that will grab and sustain your audience’s interest. \nWho is this course for? \n\nStudents who have completed Discovering Improv & Intro to Performing Improv and want to take the next step\nPerformers who have some improv experience and want to develop their story skills \nWriters who want to explore a more spontaneous approach\nAnyone who has learned improv elsewhere and wants to start learning with the BIT school\n\n\n \n \n \n \nClass Details\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students. \nPrice changes to our courses\nLike many other small\, independent businesses\, over the past year the cost of running our venue has increased significantly. This has included increased utility bills and higher staff wages to ensure we maintain our Living Wage employer status by complying with the increase in the National Living Wage. SUMMARY:Performing Improv L2: Approaches to Scenework
DESCRIPTION:23rd July – 3rd September| Tuesdays | 19:00 – 21:30\nScenes are the building blocks of improvised theatre\, but there are as many different ways to play a scene as there are improvisers. From emotionally-focused play\, to creating a narrative flow of cause and effect\, deftly weaving themes and concepts together\, or just finding something funny to do again (but bigger)\, how you approach a scene helps to define how it plays out.  This 7-week course delves into improvisation techniques and theory from a range of perspectives to help you stretch your scenic muscles and develop your own approach to scenework. \nA great course for those looking to develop their scenework skills and explore their personal voice as an improviser. \nThis course is part of our Level 2 Performing Improv programme. Completion of Level 1 courses (or equivalent beginner-to-intermediate training) is recommended\, but not required. \n\n \n \n \n \nCLASS DETAILS\nThis is a 7-week course capped at 12 participants\, plus 2 instructors (14 people in total). \nThe Lead Instructor for this course is Cat Murphy. \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about these classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net.

SUMMARY:History of Improv with David Escobedo
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 27th July | 10:00 – 17:00\nImprov is everything—or at least that’s how it feels at some point. Once you study improv long enough\, it blends into your everyday life. There is a reason for that! By learning about the history of improv\, we can see that the shows we practice today were born out of social work and protest. The focus was on “people connecting beyond cultural and language differences.”  And that practice builds community. \nThe ugly side of improv is that it became dominated by an elite set of voices. A specific narrative became prioritized and repeated over and over. In Los Angeles\, you would commonly joke\, “What do you call five white guys with beards in plaid button-down shirts\, Converse shoes\, and a hoodie? An improv team.” \nWe will talk about the origin of improv\, of “game”\, and how it developed (and mashed like potatoes) between Chicago and London. The history of improv is more than Spolin\, Close and Johnstone. \nThis interactive workshop combines learning the history of improv with trying some of the techniques and approaches from different eras and styles of improv. You will come away with a new appreciation of how improv as an art form got to where it is today and lots of ideas on where it could go next. \n\n \n \n \n \nAbout the Instructor\nDavid Escobedo did his master’s degree in improv and is in the final year of a PhD on improv. Having practiced and coached improv since 1994\, David has over 30 years of experience producing\, performing and teaching improv.  While living in Los Angeles as a professional actor\, he took classes with Second City\, iO West and other improv schools in the region. David runs the Improv Boost online which includes interviews\, articles and animation surrounding improv.

SUMMARY:Improv Your Perspective with Emma Boddy
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 27th July | 14:00 – 17:00\nCome join us for this 3-hour workshop ‘Improv Your Perspective’ – ideal for anyone interested in personal development\, playfulness and exploring influences from Playback Theatre* with the unique twist of a Solution-Focused** approach. \nBenefits \n\nIncreased confidence\nFocusing on solutions \nCollaboration\nImproved mood\nReduced social/anxiety\nMore confidence in day-to-day life due to taking risks in a safe and supported environment\nGetting comfortable with making mistakes and celebrating them!\nSolution focused tools to take home with you \nExplore Playback theatre forms\n\nHow does it work? \nWhen improvising\, being playful and incorporating a solution-focused approach\, the part of the brain connected to self-censoring is shut off. This helps to remove inhibitions\, and increases activity in the part of the brain responsible for self-expression\, such as telling stories & responding to stimulus. By being in the moment or being mindful we can forget the worries & fears about things beyond what we’re experiencing right now. This is a powerful & fun workshop to quieten the thoughts that hold us back with the added benefit of finding solutions to life’s irks along the way! \n“I had a fantastic evening. I wasn’t sure what to expect\, but Emma created an immediate rapport with the group\, and a great sense of fun and entertainment. I also learnt a lot about myself\, and how I express myself\, which has proved invaluable in my work as a lecturer\, journalist and writer. It was an absolutely terrific event\, an uplifting combination of enjoyment and education\, and I would strongly recommend Emma and her work to anyone.” – Simon Hall\, Course Leader of Compelling Communication Skills  \n(University of Cambridge)\, ex BBC journalist\, and author of Compelling Communication (Cambridge University Press). \n*Playback Theatre is an interactive form of improv theatre where stories from audience members’ lives are shared and enacted by the players on the spot. \n**The solution-focused approach is drawn from Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and is a short-term\, goal-focused approach\, which incorporates positive psychology principles and practices\, and helps people construct solutions rather than focusing on life’s challenges. \n\n\nAbout the Instructor\nEmma is a seasoned improviser and playback performer with international playback theatre group ‘Story Lane’. She is a qualified solution focused hypnotherapist\, personal performance coach & conductor of playback theatre. \nHer background is in wellbeing where she has worked as a recovery worker and facilitator for Mind\, Devon\, Avon & Wiltshire Partnership trusts as well as local mental health charities and wellbeing festivals (Buddhafields/Into the Wild).
