SUMMARY:The Harold Made Easy with Maria Peters
DESCRIPTION:October 22nd – December 10th | Wednesdays | 18:30 – 2100 (Showcase on 10th December)\n———————(No class on November 26th)———————\n\nThis course will undoubtedly make you a better improviser.\n\nThe Harold improv format is an essential skill set for anyone looking to upgrade their improv to the next level.\nIt pushes you to listen more deeply\, play with greater creativity\, and build stories that stick with an audience far beyond a single scene. Whether you’ve been performing The Harold for a while or have only heard rumours about it\, these 6 x workshops will guide you through both foundations and advanced techniques\, all while boosting your confidence in a fun\, supportive\, and welcoming space.\n\nAnd when it comes to your instructor there’s no one better to learn The Harold from. Maria Peters trained directly with Charna Halpern\, the actual co-creator of the format. She spent months studying with instructors from iO and Second City Chicago\, UCB New York and brings over a decade of experience performing around the world.\n\nHere are some of the things you’ll walk away with from the course: \n\n\n\n\nGroup Mind – Practical techniques that lead to that elusive\, abstract\, and magical thing when an ensemble seems to be thinking with one mind.\n\n\nLong-Form Storytelling – We’re not talking about the classic narrative ‘hero’s journey’ or ‘once upon a time’ narrative structure here. You’ll learn the 3-stranded framework that almost all Television episodes are based upon. You’ll weave characters arcs and themes throughout. All while building satisfying endings to shows that feel like powerful scripted narratives.\n\n\nAdvanced Editing Skills – You’ll have a better sense of scenic timing as well as greater confidence in entering or ending scenes.\n\n\nAmerican Style Improv – The Harold is the foundation for a lot of long-form improv worldwide. Knowing it will help you wrap your head around loads of other formats as well as giving you the tools and inspiration to create your own.

SUMMARY:Level 3: Performing Improv - Creating Characters
DESCRIPTION:28th October – 9th December | Tuesdays | 18:30 – 21:00\nBe anyone (or anything) you want to be – in improv\, the possibilities are limitless! But where to start? When you’re making spontaneous creative choices and responding on-the-fly\, it can be difficult to play a character who feels different from yourself. There’s often so much going on that you hardly have room to think about being someone else. \nThis seven-week course introduces the tools\, techniques\, and tricks used to create characters on-the-spot. You’ll explore how characters can emerge and grow through physicality\, status\, and the relationships between characters – building your confidence in stepping into another person’s shoes when you perform.\n \nWho is this course for? \n\nStudents who have completed Discovering Improv & Intro to Performing Improv and want to take the next step\nPerformers who have some improv experience and want to develop their improvised characterisation skills \nAnyone who has learned improv elsewhere and wants to start learning with the BIT school\n\n\n \n \n \n \nCLASS DETAILS\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by an experienced facilitator. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Improv Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays | 14:00 – 16:00\n\nThis is a fun and friendly workshop led by LGBTQ+  instructors for people who are LGBTQ+\, and is open to all levels. You can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context.  Sessions will focus on fun\, representing your own identity(ies) in improv\, and connecting with other improvisers. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWhilst we aim to be an LGBTQ+ friendly venue and believe that improv is an empowering artform for everyone\, we recognise that for many reasons – not least wanting to avoid stereotypes and prejudice – some people may not feel confident or even safe to be open about their LGBTQ+ identity in classes or when improvising. \nLGBTQ+ improvisers may worry about (or even have experienced) being judged\, misunderstood\, or stereotyped for their identity\, or they may be put off by heteronormative bias (the expectation that heterosexual desire and relationships and binary gender are the default) in improvised scenes. \nThe aim of these workshops is to build community and increase visibility\, and make space for LGBTQ+ stories and experience in improv. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nA note on the term “LGBTQ+”: \nThe Bristol Improv Theatre uses the term LGBTQ+ as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identities outside of heterosexuality and the gender binary. The LGBTQ stands for: Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender and Queer. The “+” is there to encompass other sexualities and gender identities\, for example asexual\, pansexual\, intersex or non-binary. \nYou will not be expected to disclose how you identify as LGBTQ+ when you join the class – unless you want to! \nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date below.\n——— \nTicket sales have been moved to our new events site!\nClick here to buy tickets!\n———

SUMMARY:Character\, Story & Song with The Maydays

Together we’ll explore the beautiful\, bizarre and delightfully dark corners of creating theatre through spontaneous song. \nThis intensive is for intermediate to experienced improvisers with some musical improv experience who want to push their skills in singing\, movement and ensemble musical storytelling beyond the obvious. Dive into the playful\, unpredictable world of musical improv through: \n\nCharacter-driven musical scenes inspired by fairy tales and whimsical narratives.\n\n\nGroup harmonies\, counterpoint and soundscapes to sharpen your listening skills and evoke atmospheres. \n\n\nPhysicality: playful ensemble movement and compelling stage presence.\n\n\nHaunting melodies\, stirring rhythms and unconventional musical styles.\n\n\nCollaborative freeform musical storytelling with emotional depth and theatricality.\n\nExpect creative risk-taking\, and spontaneous musical magic. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have new tools for integrating song\, character and theatricality into your improvisation — and the confidence to explore musical improv in bold\, surprising ways. \nMagical\, gothic\, otherworldly\, but always playful; just bring your energy\, your imagination and a willingness to get weird! \nMore about the tutors and The Maydays \nWith a history spanning over twenty years\, The Maydays – an award-winning Brighton based improv company – were UK pioneers of longform and music improvisation\, both in performance and running improv classes and retreats. Having taught throughout the UK and Europe\, there are many improv communities that have their roots in Maydays teaching. Their show Happily Never After\, which toured internationally as well as multiple Edinburgh Fringes\, has been revived this year and plays at the BIT on 13th December. Now predominantly a performance company\, this is a rare opportunity to learn with two of the longest standing Maydays company members Liz Peters (Yes Anderson\, Bumper Blyton) & Rebecca MacMillan (Closer Each Day\, Impromptu Shakespeare)\, together with Joe Samuel\, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best improv musicians.  \nMore about the instructors: \nRebecca MacMillan\nRebecca has been teaching for over twenty years and has been learning and performing improv since before then\, taking inspiration from a huge range of schools\, teachers and other influences. She’s active in developing an improv community in Stroud\, where she lives\, and also teaches in collaboration with the Bristol Improv Theatre.  \nThe past year saw her teach at the Robin Hood International Improv Festival in Nottingham\, Birmingham Improv Festival and Gather Improv Festival in Ireland. Co-founder of the Maydays\,  she also performs with Closer Each Day\, Impromptu Shakespeare\, Le Wronge and The Library of Forgotten Books with Anděl Sudik.  \nRebecca is a nurturing and supportive teacher with a playful sparkle. She loves to help improvisers discover their improv superpowers\, lean into and take joy from them. Outside of improv\, she dances in amazing places with legendary folksters Boss Morris. \nLiz Peters \nLiz has been performing professionally for 20+ years\, having trained as an actor at Mountview before studying improv at iO Chicago and with many teachers from other improv schools.  \nA player with The Maydays since 2009\, she has improvised and taught across Europe at numerous festivals and performs regularly at Komedia Brighton.  Liz is part of Ohana\, an international collective of improvisers committed to developing our craft\, and performs with other teams including Bumper Blyton\, Le Wronge\, Yes Queens and Yes Anderson – an improvised Wes Anderson style show. \nShe created a solo musical comedy ‘Toybox’\, which earned her a Best Female Performer nomination at Brighton Fringe. Offstage\, Liz uses improv and embodiment as a training tool for organisations and individuals\, and wrote the non-fiction book ‘Own It’\,  for which she also narrates the audiobook. \nShe likes being underwater and eating potatoes in all their forms\, though not at the same time.  \nJoe Samuel \nJoe trained in Music at Royal Holloway University and went on to perform in bands\, and then became Musical Director of The Treason Show and The Maydays both based in Brighton.  He has been the Musical Director of many European Improv Festivals including Barcelona\, Amsterdam and Lyon\, to name but a few.  He has performed with many of the Improv Troupes in the UK and abroad\, collaborating with Joe Bill and Heather with ‘Blues Hammer’ and performing with the likes of Stacey Smith\, Patty Stiles and Jill Bernard. \nJoe conceived and directed ‘Happily Never After’ with The Maydays\, which was performed throughout Europe and at the Edinburgh Festival to much acclaim.  He is one of the few improv musicians worldwide who plays online for workshops and shows. He has also co-written a book on musical improv\, as well as creating content around music theory and harmony. \nAs a musician and coach\, Joe specialises in developing the relationship between musician and on-stage improviser\, encouraging people to use and respond to music in scenes as well as songs and full-length improvised musicals.
