SUMMARY:Performing Improv Level 1: Making a Scene
DESCRIPTION:6th January – 17th February | Mondays | 19:00 – 21:30\nPeople often start their journeys into improvisation by rediscovering the joys of play – there’s a pure and deeply human delight that we can get from messing around together and being silly! But how do you go from playing with each other for your own delight to entertaining an audience with fully-fledged improvised comedy and drama? \nThis seven-week course aims to equip you with the tools you need to take your improvisation to the stage by creating spontaneous and compelling scenes. You’ll explore how to make bold choices that drive a scene forward or give it a strong start\, how to build a shared world for your scene using basic mime and space-work\, and the essential ingredients that make a scene come together (or fall apart without them).  \nWho is this course for? \n\nStudents who have completed Discovering Improv & Intro to Performing Improv and want to take the next step\nPerformers who have some improv experience and want to develop their improvised scene work skills \nAnyone who has learned improv elsewhere and wants to start learning with the BIT school\n\n\n \n \n \n \nClass Details\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students. \nIf the cost of this course is a barrier for you\, please check out our Pay It Forward scheme or drop us an email at hello@improvtheatre.net. We’re always here to listen and provide as much support as we are able to.

SUMMARY:Double Bill: Storm Compass & What Happened in the Interval
DESCRIPTION:Friday 10th January | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nTake a break from the January grind with this mind-bending improv double bill! Two genre-defying shows that play with reality and time whilst exploring human relationships\, inspired by audience suggestions that will take on a life of their own. \nMore about the acts in this Double Bill: \nStorm Compass\nBrought to you by Real Positive Poles\, Storm Compass is an improvised genre-defying story of connection beyond lifetimes\, inspired by David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas. \nLove. Hope. Fear. Etc… \nSome stories never change\, and some stories change all the time. It all depends on when they happen… \nReal Positive Poles present a series of interconnected stories set across time\, from the stone age to the far future and everything in between.  \nInspired by such time spanning stories as Cloud Atlas and Sea of Tranquillity but with no prior knowledge required. \nWhat Happened in the Interval\nTwo people are about to have their lives changed by the power of theatre. The show they see affects them so much that they never see the end. We find out how their lives change and answer the question of what happened in the interval. \nWhat Happened in the Interval was created as part of the Unscripted Players programme.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Giant Steps Present: Something from Nothing
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1st February | 10:00 – 13:00 (CANCELLED)\nThis workshop has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Anyone who has booked a ticket to this event has been emailed. We apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.  \nThis workshop is all about organic scenes. How do you start scenes when you’ve had no or minimal opening? How do you start scenes when you are on the backline and have no ideas? How do you take scenes from banal beginnings to something special? We’ll explore lots of techniques to make you feel more playful\, more erudite\, and more interesting on stage. Expect bespoke exercises you’ve never done before. A fresh perspective. DESCRIPTION:Saturday 8th February | 11:00 – 15:00\nPlease note: This event is an external hire. For questions not relating to the venue\, please get in touch with Ben Van der Velde.  \nWhether you’re an open mic comic wanting to learn the basics of compering or a more seasoned pro keen to extend your skill set\, join accomplished compere Ben Van der Velde for this four hour workshop focusing on the skills of hosting and crowd work. \n\nIn this workshop you’ll cover: \n* How to unlock your creativity and natural improvisational skills\n* Persona and status\n* How to get at least 5 laughs from each audience member\n* Asking better questions to mine better information and create better riffs\n* Endowing audience members to create fantasy worlds to play with\n* Performing one man scenes\n* How to create a story of the night by weaving together different audience interaction \nWe’ll also look at useful shortcuts for effective crowdwork\, how to deal with hecklers and how to host non-comedy events. All abilities/levels of experience welcome. \n“Before Ben’s enjoyable and productive workshop\, I didn’t feel very confident talking to the audience. Within six months of doing the workshop I was offered my first TV hosting job and I felt prepared and excited for it.” William Stone\n \n“The workshop was brilliant! The four hours flew by. Ben is very generous and has a really positive “can do” attitude towards comedy. I left feeling a lot stronger as a comic.” Aideen McQueen\n\n“I have been doing stand up for two decades but Ben’s workshop taught me things I still hadn’t learned. He’s encouraged me to bust out of my scripted straitjacket and be more playful on stage. Would recommend this workshop to any comic no matter what their level.” Andy White\nBOOK YOUR TICKETS HERE >

SUMMARY:Tales of Adventure presents: Romantic Ridiculousness
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 13th February | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nVisited in the night by a spirit on Valentine’s Eve\, three hapless 30-something friends have been delivered a terrifying ultimatum – if they don’t change their unlovable ways and find true romance by midnight on Valentine’s Day\, they will be lovelorn forever! There’s no shortage of lonely hearts (or single hotties) in the big city\, but is it even possible for love to bloom in such a short span of time? With only 24 hours on the clock\, they’ll have to bust out all their (limited) romantic know-how to succeed. But what will bring them the love they need – dating apps\, meet-cutes\, the attractive-but-grouchy supervisor at work\, hoping a Hollywood actor stumbles into your bookstore to escape the paparazzi\, a fake romance that becomes real? The options are endless\, but time isn’t! \nTales of Adventure is an improvised storytelling panel show with live illustration\, inspired by tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons. Each episode sees a crack team of comedians and improvisers combining their talents to craft a thrilling and hilarious narrative in a different genre\, aided (and sometimes challenged) by suggestions from the Audience. Expect chaotic comedy\, high-energy silliness\, and occasional touching moments amongst the nonsense. \nLike all improvised shows\, content may vary – recommended for ages 14+ \n(Please note: all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)
