SUMMARY:The Improv Gym
DESCRIPTION:Every Monday (from 24th July – 28th August) | 19:00 – 21:30\nImprove your improv!  \nIn your journey through improv\, it isn’t always about acquiring a new skill for your improviser’s toolkit or throwing yourself into a new and unfamiliar style of play. Sometimes you need to practise your existing skills\, polish up your play\, and get your reps in with some feedback/pointers and constructive critique from an expert. Enter the Improv Gym! \nPart rehearsal room\, part personal improv training\, the Improv Gym is a facilitated space where you can work on your skills and draw upon the expertise of our experienced teaching staff. Each session will be led by a Bristol Improv Theatre Instructor who will warm you up and set you going with exercises\, games\, and scenes that will work on the skill areas that you want to improve.  \nIf you have a particular skill or piece of work that you want to focus on\, let the instructor know and they’ll tailor your session accordingly. If you’re working on something with specialised equipment\, skills\, or knowledge – such as puppetry\, singing\, dance\, or any props/technical requirements – please email hello@improvtheatre.co.uk ahead of time so that we can prepare everything we’ll need to support you in the session. \nEach session lasts 2½ hours and is capped at 16 places. The bar will be open afterwards – why not stick around for a drink and a chat? \nThe Improv Gym is about improving the skills you want to work on – if you’re looking for something a bit more structured or just want to turn up and play\, why not try our Improv Drop-ins?

SUMMARY:5 Day Advanced Improv Intensive with Katy Schutte
DESCRIPTION:Monday 21st August – Friday 25th August \n10:00 – 17:00\nShake your improv up\, make new friends\, double-down on your skills and pick up some new ones. \nThis advanced improv intensive will help you rebuild your basic skills and connect with your new team\, as well as pushing your work to a higher level. The emphasis will always be on joy\, fun and playing safely. \nYou’ll find different ways into relationship\, dialogue\, staging\, and object work. You’ll experiment with ensemble\, super-agreement and found formats. \nThe intensive training will culminate with a showcase on the Friday evening where the group will have the opportunity to share their skills on stage at Bristol Improv Theatre. Katy will also be performing A Brand New Musical with Lloydie James Lloyd. \nYou’ll receive personal notes (if you want them) to continue your learning beyond the intensive week. \nKaty will be bringing her dog Pooka to the class – Pooka won’t be improvising\, but will be in the room. \n\n \n \n \n \nAbout the Instructor \nKaty Schutte is one of the UK’s leading improv teachers. She performs and teaches all over the world\, is Head Teacher and Course Designer for Hoopla (the UK’s largest improv school)\, was Co-Founder/Director at the International Improv Station and one of The Maydays since their founding year in 2004-2022 with stints as Director and Artistic Director. She is half of legendary sci-fi improv duo Project2 and author of The Improviser’s Way: A Longform Workbook\, which is published by Nick Hern Books. Katy trained at Second City and iO Chicago and with teachers from the Annoyance\, UCB\, Groundlings\, The Magnet and lots of other places. \nKaty’s dog is called Pooka. She’ll be one year old in August\, so we can celebrate her birthday together. Pooka is from Celtic folklore; a mythical creature with black and white fur that can shapeshift into the forms of other animals. Katy has definitely seen her turn into a snake\, a horse and a blanket. \nClass Details\nThis is a five-day intensive\, capped at 16 participants.  \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about the classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at hello@improvtheatre.net \n  \nPhotography credit to ‘The Other Richard’.

SUMMARY:My Father's Nose
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 27th July | 20:00 (Doors 19:30)\nAfter his execution\, Walter Raleigh’s widow carried his head around in a bag for thirty years. These days\, that sort of thing is frowned upon. My Father’s Nose is a new play about a recently bereaved man struggling to let go of the past. Literally. It’s a play about parents and children\, and how their relationships change over time. About how joy turns to grief\, and back again. About memory\, and how hard it can be to lose it\, and how hard it can be when you can’t. \nDouglas Walker returns to the Bristol Improv Theatre with his brand new play. Previous work includes improvising with Racing Minds\, Completely Wonderful\, Murder She Didn’t Write\, and his acclaimed Christmas show Of Christmas Past. \n “Exceptional…characters as self-assured as they are eloquent” The Skinny ★★★★ \nWith Support from The Thoroughgoods\nThe Thoroughgoods are a local improv group\, formed of graduates from the Bristol Improv Theatre. Their debut show Yesterday\, with Jean Thoroughgood tells the life story of the titular Jean—a tale that is epic\, comedic\, tragic and unpredictable. Much like the Thoroughgoods themselves!
