SUMMARY:CANCELLED: LGBTQ+ Improv Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 19th April | CANCELLED \nUnfortunately\, the 19th April session has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We apologise for any disappointment caused. Any existing ticket bookers have been emailed. \nThis is a fun and friendly workshop led by LGBTQ+  instructors for people who are LGBTQ+\, and is open to all levels. You can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context.  Sessions will focus on fun\, representing your own identity(ies) in improv\, and connecting with other improvisers. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWhilst we aim to be an LGBTQ+ friendly venue and believe that improv is an empowering artform for everyone\, we recognise that for many reasons – not least wanting to avoid stereotypes and prejudice – some people may not feel confident or even safe to be open about their LGBTQ+ identity in classes or when improvising. \nLGBTQ+ improvisers may worry about (or even have experienced) being judged\, misunderstood\, or stereotyped for their identity\, or they may be put off by heteronormative bias (the expectation that heterosexual desire and relationships and binary gender are the default) in improvised scenes. \nThe aim of these workshops is to build community and increase visibility\, and make space for LGBTQ+ stories and experience in improv. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nA note on the term “LGBTQ+”: \nThe Bristol Improv Theatre uses the term LGBTQ+ as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identities outside of heterosexuality and the gender binary. The LGBTQ stands for: Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender and Queer. The “+” is there to encompass other sexualities and gender identities\, for example asexual\, pansexual\, intersex or non-binary. \nYou will not be expected to disclose how you identify as LGBTQ+ when you join the class – unless you want to! \nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date below.

SUMMARY:Global Majority Improv Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays | 11:00 – 13:00\n(Please check the calendar below for dates of upcoming sessions)\nThis fun and friendly workshop for people from Global Majority backgrounds is open to all levels – you can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context. Join instructors Aisha and Kierann to learn and practise improv skills and build your confidence in bringing your whole self to your improv practise\, as well as building links with others. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWe recognise that the improv scene in Bristol and the wider UK is predominantly white\, and does not reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity we otherwise see around us. We also recognise that when practising improv there can be a (conscious or subconscious) drive for people to conform to the dominant culture\, as well as the potential for people’s (conscious or unconscious) biases to come up. Facing the latter can lead to additional emotional labour for people from historically marginalised and minoritised groups\, which is\, let’s face it\, exhausting. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nWho Are these Workshops For? \nAnti-racist activist Rosemary Campbell-Stephens coined the term Global Majority to refer to people who are “black\, Asian\, brown\, dual-heritage\, indigenous to the Global South\, and/or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities'” highlighting that it is an important reframing because this demographic “represents approximately 80% of the world’s population.” The term also includes Latine\, Arab and Romani people\, Pacific Islanders\, and other biracial or multiracial people mixed with one or more of the above-listed. \nWe welcome Global Majority community members from all walks of life in this space\, including people who\, on first appearance\, may not feel or visually believe they belong in the Global Majority community. All members of the Global Majority are welcome to these sessions\, regardless of their appearance. The group has been created as a space for those who can sometimes feel othered in predominantly white spaces\, and we welcome you to self-identify if it is right for you.

SUMMARY:Rodney Black: Who Cares? It’s Working.
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 3rd May | 20:00 – 21:00\nPlease note: This event is an external hire. For questions not relating to the venue\, please get in touch with Full Frontal Theatre. \nIn the comedy world\, where controversy is king\, when does the joke stop being funny? \nRodney Black’s career is booming\, thanks to a money hungry manager and the seemingly impenetrable defence that it’s all ‘just a joke!’ \nBut when a super-fan makes headlines\, Rodney’s darkest joke becomes nothing to laugh about… \nTackling cancel-culture\, misogyny and what we find funny\, ‘it’s difficult. It will grab audiences\, and it doesn’t let go.’ (North West End\, 4Stars). \n‘A big and bold writer to watch’ – Nick Blood (Marvel) \nAward-winning new writing\, with a flare for the provocative.

SUMMARY:James Ross Does Guess Who?
DESCRIPTION:Friday 9th May | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nRemember childhood-favourite Guess Who? It’s that\, but based on vibes and played with you\, the lovely audience. Failure is certain. A good time not absolutely guaranteed but quite likely. It’s a very silly party show\, I think you’ll have fun with it.  \nJames Ross is the brains behind long-running\, leftie\, no-punching-down\, cult-favourite London comedy night Quantum Leopard.  \nFive-time Chortle Award winner.  \n★★★★★ (One4Review.co.uk).  \n★★★★ (Daily Mirror).  \n‘[The] irresistible momentum of a drunk on an obstacle course‘ (Socialist). \nSupported by: The Groundhogs\nThe Groundhogs originated as part of Bristol Longform Comedy and are icons of Bristol’s longform improv scene. Watch their cast relive the same scene over and over – and see how the tiniest of changes can lead to a totally different future\, exploring the many different ways that a single scene could have gone…but didn’t.

SUMMARY:Tales From The Wasteland: Post-Apocalyptic Improv
DESCRIPTION:Friday 23rd May | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nTales From The Wasteland is an improvised post-apocalyptic adventure comedy. This twisted and talented cast of wastelanders will take a single suggestion from you and craft an entire narrative show with no pre-prepared characters\, story or dialogue. \nIf the world was ending\, what would be the one thing you’d want to survive? Join us as we explore a new world and find out what’s left over after Earth’s devastation. Expect raiders\, mutants and violence over scarce resources in this absurd dark comedy inspired by classics of the genre such as Mad Max\, The Last of Us and Fallout. \nWarning: this show tends to have dark themes\, violence and cannibalism. Seriously\, cannibalism comes up way too often. \n“I’m still reeling at how such an intricate tale was woven on the spot\, it’s truly a gift this cast has been blessed with.” – Obscure Reviews \nWITH SUPPORT FROM: The Red Room\nImmerse yourself in a David Lynch inspired show\, depicting a quant middle-american town where the spectre of death has passed through and torn apart the lives of each and every member of this community. Hearts break\, hopes are born and passions ignite for these souls touched by loss. \nFor your viewing pleasure: an absurd and entirely improvised experience that will expose you to both the comedic highs and the tragic lows of these all too human characters. \nContent Warning: May contain descriptions of death and other adult themes.
