SUMMARY:Bareback Kings - Find Your Drag Persona
DESCRIPTION:Ever seen someone in drag and thought “I wish I was that confident!” and longed to give it a go? Well\, come and try out Drag for the first time\, in a safe and supportive environment. In this session\, we will explore your drag personas via the use of the body in the space using various movement techniques and a tonne of fun exercises. Here we will attempt to break gender apart and you can push into every corner to find out what works for you. \nThis session is for complete beginners all the way through to those who have actor training. You don’t have to have Instagram-worthy contouring skills\, or a wardrobe to make Marc Jacobs weep\, you simply have to come with a willingness to give it a go and an open mind and we can try and unlock the parts of yourself that you long to meet. \nDuring this sessions you’ll Learn: \n\n A brief introduction to drag history\n The means of exploring your own drag persona using various physical stage crafts\n Basic knowledge of how to build characters from the outside in\n An introduction to the work of Laban to build character\n How to use your newly found personas in an improv setting with ease\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\nFrancesca Reid (She/They)\, as seen on E4\, BBC3 & Comedy Central\, is an actor/singer/comedian/improviser/presenter/drag king. After graduating from East 15 Acting School they took their passion for clowning across the globe training in both the US & UK. Their most recent solo show was a wonderfully received run at the Vault Festival of their first solo hour as the bawdy & laddish “Brent Would”. \nAs a neurodivergent member of the LGBTQIA community\, it has been their life’s work to create work that allows them to be their authentic self and for folks to feel seen in that too. From the mainstage at UCB in NYC & Second City in Toronto to international comedy festivals in Sweden\, Finland & beyond\, Francesca can be found delighting audiences with their high energy hosting\, raucous solo drag-prov or even creating a whole 1hr long musical\, in front of audiences very eyes. Having performed & facilitated with kids\, community collectives & at-risk groups\, Francesca loves being able to make strangers into friends. \nPhoto Credit – Danilo Zocatelli Cesco @danilozc

SUMMARY:Stage Craft for Improv
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 11th March | 13:00 – 17:00\nEver watched an improv show & simply seen two talking heads in front of you? Whilst the improv may still be great\, there’s so much more you can add to your scenes to make them more engaging. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore how you can add gravitas and theatricality to your improv by inhabiting the space of the stage. We’ll look at how you can use your body to create characters\, objects or concepts\, inspired by the work of Rudolf Laban\, Jerzy Marian Grotowski and other notable practitioners. We’ll also learn some vocal warm-ups and consider the mastery of the voice. \nStagecraft is a fantastic addition to your improv toolkit. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll feel more confident using the space and your body to add colour to your scenes. \n\n\nAbout the Instructor\nFrancesca Reid (She/They)\, as seen on E4\, BBC3 & Comedy Central\, is an actor/singer/comedian/improviser/presenter/drag king. SUMMARY:BBFC Presents: PLANET OF DINOSAURS (1977)
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY 16TH MARCH | 20:00 (DOORS OPEN 19:30)\n\n\n\n\nAs Adam Driver battles prehistoric beasts in the big budget 65\, we opted for a much lower budget alternative – 1977’s Planet of Dinosaurs! \nAs a child who was obsessed with the stop-motion work of legends like Ray Harryhausen and Willis H. O’Brien\, it’s safe to say that if a film features FX that have been crafted with time and care\, they’re going to win a special place in our heart. So it is with Planet of Dinosaurs. \nThis low-budget B-movie from director James K. Shea saw most of the budget spent on the stop motion dinosaurs\, which have been deemed so impressive that the footage has been used in numerous other films. So much so that there is a ‘Recycling the dinosaurs from Planet of Dinosaurs’ Letterboxd page. \nWith most of the money spent on the monsters\, everything else about the film is incredibly cheap – from the actors that seem to have been picked up from the streets of 70s L.A.\, to the fact they’re filming at Vasquez Rocks where countless episodes of Star Trek were made\, to the soft gauze on the film that makes it feel like the film is about to turn into a porno at any second. \nWe’re betting Adam Driver’s 65 won’t have that problem. \nTrapped in a nightmare world of prehistoric monsters! A spaceship gets lost and is forced to make an emergency landing on an unknown planet. The planet looks much like Earth\, only with no trace of civilization. Soon the crew discovers that there are dinosaurs on the planet\, and blood-thirsty buggers at that. The crew hopes to be found and rescued\, but they have to struggle to survive until then. \nThis film and event is certified ’PG’. Please note\, any guests under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nIn order to make the event as accessible to as many people as possible\, the main feature will be subtitled. \n“Although set in the future\, Planet of the Dinosaurs\, is pure 1970s camp\, with hairstyles and jump-suits that evoke unpleasant memories of the horrible disco era.” – Cinefantastique \nAll tickets: £5 (All profits will go to Travelling Light Theatre Company)

SUMMARY:Improv Double Bill: Spacecats & Real Positive Poles
DESCRIPTION:The Bristol Improv Theatre presents a double bill of improvised comedy especially sourced from the South West. \nSPACECATS\nSpacecats is a surreal episodic comedy show\, where you will see improvisers play anything from atoms to asteroids. Like brave astronomers\, like wise philosophers\, like kittens playing with a ball of yarn\, they delve into the great unanswered questions of the universe such as: \nHow do spoons really feel about each other? Why do seagulls hate tik tok? Can humans and coral reefs ever be friends? \nWe weave abstract stories and concepts into an overarching narrative\, based on your suggestions! Expect to see physical theatre\, contemporary dance\, off-the-cuff beat poetry and irreverent dream sequences in this kaleidoscope of improvised deep space exploration! \nREAL POSITIVE POLES\nReal Positive Poles are a group of award winning Bristol based improvisers with a passion for big ideas and science fiction. We take inspiration from your favourite shows to create brand new episodes based on audience suggestions. \nWinner of The Brighton Seagull’s Best Improvised Show Award and top 3 shortlisted for the Best Show in all categories by The Reviews Hub at the Brighton Fringe 2022. \n★★★★★- Wriggle Bristol | ★★★★★- The Reviews Hub \n“absolutely perfect improv” – Starburst Magazine \n“incredibly funny and intensely engaging’ – The Brighton Seagull \n“Quirky\, offbeat and hilarious” – Swindon Fringe Review

SUMMARY:Sticky Notes! Bristol Revunions Student Comedy Night
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 25th March | 20:00\nThe Bristol Revunions are back to host a night of student comedy! With special guests Bristol Improv and a host of local stand-ups. What more could you want? \nThe Bristol Revunions are the Bristol University sketch comedy society who have been around since the 1950’s. They’ve performed with the Cambridge Footlights\, Leeds Tealights\, Durham Revue and many more. Not so fresh off a 10 show stint at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they “nearly made a profit”\, you don’t want to miss them now! \nBristol Improv are the University of Bristol’s improvised comedy society. Helmed entirely by barely regulated students\, the society amuses audiences at the uni and around Bristol venues\, as well as making their own successful excursion to The Edinburgh Fringe last summer. Armed with an increasing repertoire of improv games and increasingly silly ideas for long-form shows\, you’ll have to see what these talented performers come up with on the night. \nWith some of the best student stand-up acts in Bristol at the moment\, catch them before they’re famous.

SUMMARY:Improvise Freely with Patti Stiles
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY 27TH MARCH – WEDNESDAY 29TH MARCH | 10:00 – 16:00\n\n\n\n\n\nRules can provide structure\, guidelines\, a compass to steer ourselves by. Rules also create a system where compliance to the rule overrides free thought and ‘getting it right’ outweighs exploration of the craft. \nRules aren’t useful when they try to limit how to improvise\, how to create\, how to think\, what you must or must not do on stage. When the freedom of play is obstructed by the limitations of rules we restrict creativity and confine the imagination. \nIn this workshop we challenge the rules as absolutes and create freedom in our improvisational work as we focus on the tools\, techniques and choices. \nABOUT PATTI STILES\n\n\n\n\n\nPatti is an actor\, improviser\, director\, teacher\, author and playwright who’s been working professionally in theatre since 1983. She served her theatre apprenticeship at the world renowned Loose Moose Theatre and was trained by Keith Johnstone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatti has an infectious enthusiasm for improvisation. Mix this with her insightful improvisation technique\, strong narrative skill and her spirit of play\, and it is no wonder she is responsible for inspiring many hundreds of people to improvise. Her understanding of Johnstone’s work and philosophy\, combined with her own discoveries and her wealth of experience on the world impro stage\, has made her a “must have” teacher for performers and companies wishing to create spontaneous theatre with fine skill\, strong narrative\, heart and elegant style. \nPlease note: this is a 3-day workshop\, running from Monday to Wednesday

SUMMARY:Gender & Genre with Patti Stiles
DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY 30TH MARCH | 10:00 – 16:00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany of the genres we perform reflect out dated social rules heavily categorised into male and female behaviour. Today’s world is different yet our storytelling is still shackled to these historical gendered roles. \nWhat if we don’t play the expected? Do the stories remain genre ‘true’ regardless of actor? By questioning\, challenging and exploring our gender bias\, and understanding the purpose of characters in stories\, we break open new levels of impro play and possibilities. The effects are really quite interesting. \n\n\n\n\nABOUT PATTI STILES\n\n\n\n\n\nPatti is an actor\, improviser\, director\, teacher\, author and playwright who’s been working professionally in theatre since 1983. She served her theatre apprenticeship at the world renowned Loose Moose Theatre and was trained by Keith Johnstone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPatti has an infectious enthusiasm for improvisation. SUMMARY:ShakeItUp: The Improvised Shakespeare Show
DESCRIPTION:Friday 14th April | 20:00 (Doors open 19:30)\nShakespeare hasn’t written anything new for an age\, so we thought we would give him a hand… Using his language\, your audience suggestions\, and our overactive imaginations\, we create a brand-new Shakespeare play live on stage. Complete with live music\, songs\, and plenty of laughs! \n FIVE STARS – “Quick witted\, inexhaustible and absolutely hysterical.” \nLondon Theatre Reviews \nFOUR STARS – “Laugh out-loud hilarious […] a great night out” \nBroadway World \nAt a ShakeItUp show\, you get to help our intrepid improvisors make up an entirely new Shakespeare play on the spot! Pick your authentic Shakespearean genre: Epic History\, Romantic Comedy\, or Gruesome Tragedy. Choose the location of where we will lay our scene\, our hero’s name\, and even their day-job! Pen your wittiest Shakespearean line for our brave actors to pull from their suitably-Shakespearean breeches when they need a helping hand. The twist? They’ll have no idea what the line will be before they say it! \nThen sit back and watch the hilarity unfold as we improvise a totally authentic (and totally bonkers) play that Willy Shakes himself would be proud of! Accompanied by improvised song and music from our talented (and flexible) ShakeItUp Band\, expect big laughs\, high drama\, and a healthy dose of rhyming couplets.

SUMMARY:Improv Drop-ins
DESCRIPTION:Mondays | 19:30 – 21:30\nLooking to stretch your improvising muscles? Then our drop-ins are for you! \nOur drop-ins run every Monday evening and alternate between scene workshops and classes focused on specific skills to help you pad out your improvisers tool-kit. \nDuring our scene workshops\, you’ll receive supportive and constructive side-coaching\, tailored to the group and designed to develop your confidence and improvisation skills. On the other hand\, the regular drop-ins will take a specific skill and explore it through games\, exercises and scenes. \nFacilitated by an experienced Bristol Improv Theatre instructor\, drop-ins are a great chance to try improv at Bristol Improv Theatre and connect with others. \nAny questions\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at hello@improvtheatre.net. \nIf you are brand new to improv\, you may prefer to try the monthly Improv Taster Session. \nUpdate on Pricing \nFrom 8th May 2023\, we’re reducing the price of our drop-ins in order to make them more accessible during the cost of living crisis. We don’t want money to be a barrier to access so no-one will be turned away due to lack of funds. If you cannot attend an event due to financial barriers\, please feel free to turn up to attend the session or you can reserve a space by emailing us at hello@improvtheatre.net. Please note\, drop-in spaces are limited so we’d recommend reserving a space in advance.  \n(Please note that the new pricing cannot be applied retrospectively to tickets already purchased). \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Unscripted Players Big April Show
DESCRIPTION:27th\, 28th & 29th April | 20:00 (Doors 19:30)\nThis Spring. Two original improvised productions. One Big Show! \nPresented\, directed and performed by the Unscripted Players\, the Bristol Improv Theatre’s amateur improv company.  \nRoll for Romance\nTwo things that go as well together as cheese and wine – nerdy roleplaying games and romance. It’s a narrative romcom mashed together with a dice based roleplaying game. Dungeons and dating (but not in that way). \nTales From The Wasteland\nAn improvised post-apocalyptic adventure. If the world was ending\, what would be the one thing you’d want to survive? Based on your suggestions\, our team of dystopian adventurers will explore a new world of endless possibilities… well\, depending on what’s left over from earth’s devastation.
