SUMMARY:Level 4: Performing Improv - Approaches to Scenework
DESCRIPTION:5th January – 16th February | Mondays | 18:30 – 21:00\nScenes are the building blocks of improvised theatre\, but there are as many different ways to play a scene as there are improvisers. From emotionally-focused play\, to creating a narrative flow of cause and effect\, deftly weaving themes and concepts together\, or just finding something funny to do again (but bigger)\, how you approach a scene helps to define how it plays out.  This 7-week course delves into improvisation techniques and theory from a range of perspectives to help you stretch your scenic muscles and develop your own approach to scenework. \nA great course for those looking to develop their scenework skills and explore their personal voice as an improviser. \nThis course is part of our Level 4 Performing Improv programme. Completion of Level 3 courses (or equivalent beginner-to-intermediate training) is recommended\, but not required. \n\n \n \n \n \nCLASS DETAILS\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by one or two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students. \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about these classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Improv Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays | 14:00 – 16:00\n\nThis is a fun and friendly workshop led by LGBTQ+  instructors for people who are LGBTQ+\, and is open to all levels. You can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context.  Sessions will focus on fun\, representing your own identity(ies) in improv\, and connecting with other improvisers. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWhilst we aim to be an LGBTQ+ friendly venue and believe that improv is an empowering artform for everyone\, we recognise that for many reasons – not least wanting to avoid stereotypes and prejudice – some people may not feel confident or even safe to be open about their LGBTQ+ identity in classes or when improvising. \nLGBTQ+ improvisers may worry about (or even have experienced) being judged\, misunderstood\, or stereotyped for their identity\, or they may be put off by heteronormative bias (the expectation that heterosexual desire and relationships and binary gender are the default) in improvised scenes. \nThe aim of these workshops is to build community and increase visibility\, and make space for LGBTQ+ stories and experience in improv. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nA note on the term “LGBTQ+”: \nThe Bristol Improv Theatre uses the term LGBTQ+ as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identities outside of heterosexuality and the gender binary. The LGBTQ stands for: Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender and Queer. The “+” is there to encompass other sexualities and gender identities\, for example asexual\, pansexual\, intersex or non-binary. \nYou will not be expected to disclose how you identify as LGBTQ+ when you join the class – unless you want to! \nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date below.\n——— \nTicket sales have been moved to our new events site!\nClick here to buy tickets!\n———

SUMMARY:The BLANK who BLANKED me
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 25th January 2026 | 19:00\n(Doors Open 18:00)\nLove stories are with us from a very young age\, beginning with idyllic fairy-tale romances featuring princes and princesses\, knights\, dragons\, and love that is pure\, sweet\, and true. This is not that kind of love story. \nThis is the kind of love story where passion strikes like a wrecking ball\, leaving you dazed\, confused\, and madly in love with an unaccountable asshole who does admittedly look really good climbing out of a lake in a thin white shirt… \nThink of dark romances that ruin your life\, forbidden loves that refuse to be denied (no matter how messy it gets)! \nFrom the creators of ‘Murder\, She Didn’t Write’ – The BLANK who BLANKED me is an improvised and unabashedly queer torrid romance with tongue firmly in (someone’s) cheek. Expect passion and pastiche\, high drama and low comedy\, lashings of laughter and perhaps true love.

SUMMARY:Being a Difficult Woman*: Taster Workshop & Networking
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 28th January | 2pm – 4pm\n(Arrival 1:45pm – Workshop 2pm – 3:30pm)\nDo you catch yourself apologising all the time? \n  \nDo you get scared to speak up in meetings\, at work or social situations? \n  \nAre you scared of being called\, or have you ever been called\, a ‘Difficult Woman?’ \n  \nUsing playing drama exercises and discussion\,  we will explore some of the tools which can be used to help us build a Difficult Woman toolkit. In this taster class\, we look at: \n  \n\nTaking up space\nAmplifying the voices of other woman and oppressed groups\nSaying no and respecting when others’ set their boundaries\n\n  \nRefreshments will be provided.  \n  \nIn the words of Audre Lorde: \n‘Our speaking out will irritate some people\, get us called bitchy or hypersensitive and disrupt some dinner parties. And then our speaking out will permit other women to speak\, until laws are changed and lives are saved and the world is altered forever. \nNext time\, ask: What’s the worst that will happen? Then push yourself a little further than you dare. Once you start to speak\, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you\, put you down and suggest it’s personal. And the world won’t end. \nAnd the speaking will get easier and easier. ‘\n\n*Please note: We are using an inclusive definition of ‘woman’ and ‘female’.\nThis event is for all cis and trans women\, as well as non-binary people who are comfortable in a space which centres the experience of women. \n\nPlaces are capped at 20. No drama or improv experience is needed but please note that we will be using some improv drama games as part of the learning.  \nAbout:\nImo Palmer is a theatre-maker\, improviser\, writer and teacher. She/they was the Theatre School Manager of The Bristol Improv Theatre 2019 –  2022 and is the Artistic Director of The Delight Collective\, creator of multiple shows including IMOGENÉ:the improvised pop concert (★★★★★ ‘ – DIVA Magazine)\, The Bish Bosh Bash (★★★★★ – Bristol 247) and International Women’s Day 2020 show ‘If These Walls Could Talk’. \n\nShe has 12+ years of experience as a facilitator and performer\, having trained with the world-leading Impro Melbourne and at Howard Fine’s Acting Studio (Melbourne).  She leads Bristol Improv Theatre’s applied improv offering and has designed and delivered activities for clients including Law Firms\, Universities\, SMEs and the Civil Service. SUMMARY:Lily Maryon: Princess Sparkles (WiP) | The Bristol Comedy Festival
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 28th January | 18:00 – 19:00\n(Doors Open 17:30)\nCLICK TO BOOK NOW\nLily Maryon is a Bristol-based actor\, writer\, and character comedian\, and a member of the sketch collective Biscuit Barrel. A Sketch Off 2024 semi-finalist\, she performs regularly across the UK alternative comedy scene—appearing either as her chaotic\, alter ego Princess Sparkles or by joyfully making up jokes on the spot. \nStep into the not-so-glittery world of Princess Sparkles — a professional princess-for-hire who’s very available\, a teeny bit unstable\, and just that little bit too much. Appearing at five-year-old birthday parties somewhere near you! She’s flustered\, running late\, and it seems more than just her costume is coming apart at the seams… \nWant to feel like a child again? Ever worked with children? Ever wondered why people warn against it? \nPrepare to be transported straight back to childhood as Princess Sparkles throws you into a chaotically fun-filled birthday extravaganza — complete with games\,“magic\,” and stories gone wildly off-script. But beware: she is definitely not Elsa. And this party might not be suitable for children… or adults… or anyone\, really. \nAs her crown begins to slip\, so does her grip on reality — and the harder she tries to tell the perfect story\, the more the threads start to unravel. \nLily Maryon’s debut show is an unhinged hour of character comedy with a theatrical twist\, placing the audience in the role of the children as Sparkles fights to keep her reputation — and herself — intact. \nThis is one of many excellent shows you can see as part of The Bristol Comedy Festival 2026. Make sure to check out everything else on offer via their homepage. \nCLICK TO BOOK NOW\n______________________ \nThe Bristol Comedy Festival @ Bristol Improv Theatre\nWednesday\, 28th January 2026 \n\n18:00 – Lily Maryon – Princess Sparkles (WiP) – Tickets\n19:30 – Biscuit Barrel: The 69-Sketch Show – Tickets\n21:00 – Luke McQueen: Comedian’s Comedian – Tickets\n\nPlease arrive before the show’s start time\, as shows are on a strict schedule.  \n______________________
