SUMMARY:Mixed Omens
DESCRIPTION:Friday 18th October | 20:00 (doors open 19:30)\nMixed Omens\, an improvised play in the style of Neil Gaiman\, is coming to the Bristol Improv Theatre! \nThe Improvised Play\, one of London’s premier narrative improv groups\, is taking on the world of the books (if not values) of Neil Gaiman! If you love American Gods\, Sandman and Good Omens\, it’s your chance to see a fantastic performance in their style. \nDescribed by audiences as “gloriously theatrical”\, Mixed Omens combines the spontaneity of improv with a three-act play structure\, physicality\, props and masks. Both witty and eerie\, the cast will provide you with an adventure to remember!  \nExplore the world of shadows outside the known reality\, where demons rub shoulders with humans and gods… Are you ready to fall through the cracks? \nKathy Rinaldi: “…one of the most beautiful\, magical\, layered pieces of improv we’ve ever seen. […] a master class in how an ensemble can transport you for an hour.” \nWith support from: The Library Of Forgotten Books\nThe Librarians Anděl Sudik & Rebecca MacMillan present The Library of Forgotten Books\, a sanctuary of lost stories. Here\, The Librarians explore neglected titles\, deciding their fate—whether to preserve them in our memories or consign them to oblivion. We invite you to bring a forgotten book for potential submission to our collection. Please note: submitted books may be damaged or destroyed in the name of improv\, so only bring ones you don’t want back. \n\n\nInstagram: @MixedOmens \, @stephendavidsonimprov  \nX – @Mixed_Omens \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/mixedomens

An improvised parody of the 1960s TV show that inspired Black Mirror. Accompanied by a live violinist\, some of Bristol’s best improvisers create two brand-new episodes of the cult sci-fi classic. Suitable for all levels of nerdiness and Twilight Zone knowledge\, including none! “A beautiful demonstration of everything that improvised performance can be”  ★★★★★ – The Reviews Hub \nAge guidance 14+ \nWarning: horror references\, gore\, flashing lights \nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date from the calendar below.

SUMMARY:Tales of Adventure Presents: Cold War Chaos
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 10th October | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nWhen the uneasy balance of power between the United States and the Soviet Union is threatened by a mad scientist’s plot for global domination\, the CIA and KGB are forced to cooperate for the sake of the planet. A team of superspies has been assembled to take the villain down with plenty of high-tech gadgetry\, tuxedos\, and enough vodka martinis to sink a battleship. But can they put aside their differences (and their egos) for long enough to foil the perfidious plot? \nTales of Adventure is an improvised storytelling panel show with live illustration\, inspired by tabletop rpgs like Dungeons and Dragons. Each episode sees a crack team of comedians and improvisers combining their talents to craft a thrilling and hilarious narrative in a different genre\, aided (and sometimes challenged) by suggestions from the Audience. Expect chaotic comedy\, high-energy silliness\, and occasional touching moments amongst the nonsense. \nLike all improvised shows\, content may vary – recommended for ages 14+ \n(Please note: all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)

SUMMARY:The Awkward Guide to Friendship
DESCRIPTION:Friday 27th September | 20:00 (doors open 19:30)\nHouse of Figs presents: The Awkward Guide to Friendship \n– Does the cat get your tongue when you’re meeting new people? \n– Does it take a while to get to know you? \n– Do you wander lonely as a cloud? \n– Are you still trying to believe that you belong\, even surrounded by friends? \nThen climb aboard… \nHouse of Figs bring you their new work navigating the choppy waters of friendship\, from perfectly platonic meet-cutes to courageous conversations… and beyond. Join poet Beth Calverley and musician Beth Roberts on a voyage through deep friendship feelings\, safely afloat in an otherworldly choir of spoken and sung voices. \nThe Awkward Guide to Friendship traces the tale of Beth & Beth’s friendship\, interspersing the duo’s own experiences of loneliness and connection with voice notes of other people talking about friendship\, original songs and immersive soundscapes. Along the way\, they invite their new friends (you!) to help inspire some live improvisations and join in with collective singing – though quiet listening is equally welcomed. \nPraise for House of Figs: \n“The definition of wholesome fun” – Shambala audience member \n“Hypnotic… radiates tenderness and awe” – Sabotage Reviews \n“One of those truly exciting creative moments where I feel a more complete\, more feeling\, more alive person for having experienced your thoughts & words.” – Awkward Guide audience member \n\n\nAbout House of Figs:\nHouse of Figs is a collaboration between Beth Calverley (The Poetry Machine) and Beth Roberts (Hands of the Heron / Hedera / Tryani Collective). Beth and Beth hold parallel roles as Poet and Musician in Residence for their local NHS Trust. From hospitals to festivals\, they create a held space wherever they perform\, illuminating the value of care for ourselves and others. They have headlined events at Lyra Bristol Poetry Festival and Komedia Bath\, and performed at Shambala\, HowTheLightGetsIn\, Green Man\, WOMAD\, Good Grief and Bristol Harbour Festival.  \nIn 2023\, the duo shared their multifaceted\, ADHD-fuelled work-in-progress and (to their relief)\, found that it deeply resonated with audiences in the moment of performance and long after the show. Since then\, the duo have honed their tangle of tangents into a powerful gig theatre piece\, with a mission that no-one will ever again think: “everyone finds friendship easier than I do.” \nFollow them @ourhouseoffigs \n  \nPhoto credit: Paul Blakemore

SUMMARY:Make the Audience Care - with Maria Peters
DESCRIPTION:25th September – 30th October | Wednesdays | 19:00 – 21:30\nPlease note: the first session of the course (Wed 25th Sept) will take place at Bristol Subud Hall\, 29 Wesley Pl\, Clifton\, Bristol\, BS8 2YD. \nThis is a twenty minute walk from the theatre\, at the top of Whiteladies Road\, with the most convenient parking being in the Clifton Down Shopping Centre. \nSessions after this will take place as normal at The Bristol Improv Theatre. \nIf you’ve ever watched an improv show you’ll know that some scenes make you lean in and hang off every word and some other scenes… Well they make you wonder if you can get away with discreetly checking your phone. \nWhat is the difference? That’s exactly what this course covers. Over 6 sessions this brand new course of workshops explores the different ways we can toy with making our audiences care. These classes will be filled with exercises and scenes experimenting with different characters\, their choices\, and relationships. \nEach session will involve improvised scene-work\, side coaching\, as well as checking in with the audience to gauge real time feedback. We’ll be exploring questions like: \n\nWhat makes the audience care if characters or relationships succeed?\nWhat makes the audience delighted to witness a scene rather than feel they are doing the improvisers a favour?\nWhat makes some scenes electric with authenticity and others feel like you are watching people pretending to be humans?\n\nThis course is aimed at intermediate level improvisers\, i.e. you’ve performed in front of an audience and feel comfortable with general scene-work.\nPlease note: These workshops are not suitable for beginners who are brand new to improvisation. \n\n \n \n \n \nAbout the Instructor\nWhen not improvising in London (at the The Comedy Store with Paul Merton & Suki Webster’s Impro Show\, or playing with the Yes Queens female improv supergroup or legendary duo Breaking and Entering) Maria performs locally with Bristol’s This Is Your Musical. \nShe’s been invited to perform at improv festivals internationally\, including Estonia\, Ireland\, Italy\, The Netherlands\, Portugal & The United States. A lot of her expertise has also been gathered from world-class instructors over the years\, studying with: Charna Halpern\, author of Truth in Comedy\, who originally developed The Harold with Del Close; Keith Johnstone; New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade; and The Second City and iO Chicago in Chicago. \nOn top of nearly 15 years of improvising\, Maria is also a world class facilitator. Her varied career encompasses Professional Development Training and Learning Workshop Design which means she’s an expert in passing on knowledge in interactive & engaging ways.\nMaria creates friendly and relaxed environments to learn in and believes in giving her students all the tools possible to find the JOY of improv for players and the audience alike.

SUMMARY:Tales of Adventure Presents: High Noon Nonsense
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 12th September | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nThe Old West can be a cruel place\, but hope still lingers in the hearts of the people. The frontier town of Golden Gulch has been under the thumb of the villainous Two Hat Gang for months now\, and the locals dream of rescue by the kind of gunslinging heroes from songs and folk tales. When three strangers ride into town\, could their prayers have been answered?

SUMMARY:Performing Improv Level 1: Creating Characters
DESCRIPTION:10th September – 22nd October | Tuesdays | 19:00 – 21:30\nBe anyone (or anything) you want to be – in improv\, the possibilities are limitless! But where to start? When you’re making spontaneous creative choices and responding on-the-fly\, it can be difficult to play a character who feels different from yourself. There’s often so much going on that you hardly have room to think about being someone else. \nThis seven-week course introduces the tools\, techniques\, and tricks used to create characters on-the-spot. You’ll explore how characters can emerge and grow through physicality\, status\, and the relationships between characters – building your confidence in stepping into another person’s shoes when you perform.\n \nWho is this course for? \n\nStudents who have completed Discovering Improv & Intro to Performing Improv and want to take the next step\nPerformers who have some improv experience and want to develop their improvised characterisation skills \nAnyone who has learned improv elsewhere and wants to start learning with the BIT school\n\n\n \n \n \n \nCLASS DETAILS\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students.

SUMMARY:Intro to Performing Improv
DESCRIPTION:10th September – 15th October | Tuesdays | 19:00 – 21:30\nImprovisation happens all over the place: at work\, at home\, when you’re messing around with your mates. Whenever you do something that you didn’t plan in advance\, try something just to have a go\, or join in with something that looks fun – you’re improvising!  \nBut what about improvising in front of people on a stage? Improv as a performance can be a scary prospect\, but it can also be tremendously fun and hugely rewarding! \nFollowing on from our hugely popular Discovering Improv course\, this six-week course will immerse you in the fundamentals of improvising for an audience through games\, exercises\, and scenes. Our experienced facilitators will guide and support you on your journey towards performing. \nIs this course for me? \nIntro to Performing is an introduction to improvisation as a performance artform\, aimed at beginners. No experience is required. This is the course for you if; \n\nYou’ve completed our Discovering Improv course and want to take the next step\nYou’re new to improv and want to learn the fundamentals of improvisation for an audience\nYou learned improv elsewhere and want to start learning with the Bristol Improv Theatre School\n\n\n \n \n \n \nClass Details\nThis course consists of 6 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 16. \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about the classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net. \nPrice changes to our courses\nLike many other small\, independent businesses\, over the past year the cost of running our venue has increased significantly. This has included increased utility bills and higher staff wages to ensure we maintain our Living Wage employer status by complying with the increase in the National Living Wage. Whilst we have undertaken an array of cost-saving measures throughout last year\, we need to implement a small price increase to our courses to be able to continue operating with the increased costs that we are facing. \nOne of our primary aims at the Bristol Improv Theatre is making improv accessible to as many people as possible. But it is also important to us that our team are paid fairly and that we can ensure the longevity of the theatre. We are continually looking and applying for funding to support our work and we hugely value the support from our audiences\, students and supporters\, whether that’s in the form of donating to the theatre\, buying tickets to our events or talking about our work with friends and family. \nIf the increase in price is a barrier for you\, please check out our Pay It Forward scheme or drop us an email at hello@improvtheatre.net. We’re always here to listen and provide as much support as we are able to

DESCRIPTION:9th September – 21st October | Mondays | 19:00-21:30 (CANCELLED)\nThis course has been cancelled due to low uptake.  \nWe will be running an additional ‘Performing Improv L1: Creating Characters’ course on this day instead. If this is of interest\, please get in touch with our Theatre School team on the following email address: theatreschool@improvtheatre.net. \nIf you have booked onto this Level 2 course\, you will have received an email from our Theatre School team.  \nWe apologise for any disappointment caused\, and thank you for understanding.   \n\nPrepare to take your story skills to the next level! Improvised narratives are one of the most intuitive and satisying performance styles budding improvisers play with\, but can also be some of the most challenging.  \nThis seven-week course explores the key skills and techniques used in improvising narrative-based performances. Using exercises and techniques inspired by the work of Keith Johnstone and Patti Stiles\, students will dive into constructing story arcs and engage in supportive ensemble work\, as well as discovering a number of tools to shake up and inspire their scenework skills. \nThis course is part of our Level 2 Performing Improv programme. Completion of a Level 1 course (or equivalent beginner-to-intermediate training) is recommended\, but not required. \nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\nCLASS DETAILS\nThis is a 7-week course capped at 12 participants\, plus up to 2 instructors (14 in total). \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about the classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net.

You know the one. Prepare to dive headfirst into a world of side-splitting scenes and comedic bits\, as an entire show is effortlessly crafted from a single word. \n‘Damn near perfect improv‘ – The Glasgow Improv Theatre \nThe Takeover Team\nThe Takeover Team is an assortment of improvisers from the community who have assembled for just two shows. That’s right\, just two shows. Catch them while you can\, because if you miss them\, you’ll never get to see them again!
