Join us at The Bristol Improv Theatre for a weekend afternoon to watch various different groups from the local Bristol improv community\, and watch or join in with a Jam. For free! \nThese groups could be showcasing brand new shows\, formats\, changes to existing shows or just simply be getting in more practice. You’ll also have a chance to provide valuable feedback and help shape the shows’ futures. \nThe Improv Lab is hosted in the bar of the Bristol Improv Theatre. The bar will be open so come on in and enjoy a drink with an afternoon of free shows and a Jam. \nDoors open at 2pm and the first show will go on at 2.20pm. When arriving\, please head straight to the bar and grab a seat. Groups may be warming up at the back of the room before the show and during the interval. \nFor the May Lab we have: \n\nLe Ponde – The house group that you could be in! A whimsical show about the interconnected lives of creatures and denizens of a pond.\nThe Spontaneous Gentlemen of Verona – We are a band of travelling Shakespearian actors\, who have lost our script! We will therefore have to create a piece in the style of the bard that will offer comedy\, tragedy and all manner of Elizabethan improv.\nStorm Compass – Award-winning improvisers Real Positive Poles present a series of interconnected stories set across time\, from the stone age to the far future and everything in between. DESCRIPTION:Saturdays | 11:00 – 13:00\n(Please check the calendar below for dates of upcoming sessions)\nThis fun and friendly workshop for people from Global Majority backgrounds is open to all levels – you can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context. Join instructors Aisha and Kierann to learn and practise improv skills and build your confidence in bringing your whole self to your improv practise\, as well as building links with others. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWe recognise that the improv scene in Bristol and the wider UK is predominantly white\, and does not reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity we otherwise see around us. We also recognise that when practising improv there can be a (conscious or subconscious) drive for people to conform to the dominant culture\, as well as the potential for people’s (conscious or unconscious) biases to come up. Facing the latter can lead to additional emotional labour for people from historically marginalised and minoritised groups\, which is\, let’s face it\, exhausting. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nWho Are these Workshops For? \nAnti-racist activist Rosemary Campbell-Stephens coined the term Global Majority to refer to people who are “black\, Asian\, brown\, dual-heritage\, indigenous to the Global South\, and/or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities'” highlighting that it is an important reframing because this demographic “represents approximately 80% of the world’s population.” The term also includes Latine\, Arab and Romani people\, Pacific Islanders\, and other biracial or multiracial people mixed with one or more of the above-listed. \nWe welcome Global Majority community members from all walks of life in this space\, including people who\, on first appearance\, may not feel or visually believe they belong in the Global Majority community. All members of the Global Majority are welcome to these sessions\, regardless of their appearance. The group has been created as a space for those who can sometimes feel othered in predominantly white spaces\, and we welcome you to self-identify if it is right for you.

SUMMARY:Performing Improv Level 2: Making a Show
DESCRIPTION:18th June – 30th July | Wednesdays* | 18:30 – 21:00\n*(Please note that one session will be on Tuesday 22nd July INSTEAD of Wednesday 23rd July)\nThis course is part of our Level 2 Performing programme\, which also includes ‘Exploring Narrative’ and ‘Approaches to Scenework’. Completion of the full carousel of Level 1 is recommended prior to taking this course. At this level\, we combine skills development with personalised feedback and coaching for performing improvised theatre & comedy.  \nIn this course\, participants are given the opportunity to shape and perform their own improv show\, with the guidance of an experienced director. \nBy the end of the course\, students will: \n\nUnderstand some improv show formats and develop their own\nUnderstand how clarifying group expectations and an artistic vision can aid the development of a show\nDevelop tools for self-reflection\, and the ability to give and receive notes as a director \nHave clear next steps for finding local performance opportunities \n\nThis course culminates in an (optional) performance of the new improv show\, made by the group\, for an invited audience of fellow students\, friends and family. \n\n      \n        \n      \n    \nClass Details:\nThis is a 7-week course. Sessions are held weekly (on the same evening\, except for the session held on 23rd July\, instead of 22nd July) and last 2.5 hours. The course will be taught by an experienced facilitator\, and there are 12 places available per course. \n  \nInstructor Bio: \nImo Palmer is a theatre-maker\, improviser\, teacher and HCPC registered Drama Psychotherapist. She/they was the Theatre School Manager of Bristol Improv Theatre 2019 –  2022 and is the Artistic Director of The Delight Collective\, creator of multiple shows including IMOGENÉ:the improvised pop concert (★★★★★ ‘IMOGENÉ is the loud\, proud and unapologetic performer we all need right now’ – DIVA Magazine)\, The Bish Bosh Bash (★★★★★ – Bristol 247) and International Women’s Day 2020 show ‘If These Walls Could Talk’.  \nShe/they has 12+ years of experience as a facilitator and performer\, having trained with the world-leading Impro Melbourne and at Howard Fine’s Acting Studio (Melbourne). She’s performed improvised Shakespeare with Soothplayers (Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, Melbourne Fringe) as well performing improvised musicals\, fairytales\, horror\, Theatresports™ and Maestro™ with Impro Melbourne.   \nShe leads Bristol Improv Theatre’s applied improv offering and has designed and delivered activities for clients including Law Firms\, Universities\, SMEs and the Civil Service. This work has been featured in the Sunday Times. She’s experienced in creating inclusive and empowering learning environments for all abilities.
