SUMMARY:The Improv Gym
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays | 19:00 – 22:00\n(please see dates of upcoming events below)\nImprove your improv!  \nIn your journey through improv\, it isn’t always about acquiring a new skill for your improviser’s toolkit or throwing yourself into a new and unfamiliar style of play. Sometimes you need to practise your existing skills\, polish up your play\, and get your reps in with some feedback/pointers and constructive critique from an expert. Enter the Improv Gym! \nPart rehearsal room\, part personal improv training\, the Improv Gym is a facilitated space where you can work on your skills and draw upon the expertise of our experienced teaching staff. Each session will be led by a Bristol Improv Theatre Instructor who will warm you up and set you going with exercises\, games\, and scenes that will work on the skill areas that you want to improve\, before providing individualised feedback\, coaching\, and critique to help you get to the next level. \nIf you have a particular skill or piece of work that you want to focus on\, let the instructor know and they’ll tailor your session accordingly. If you’re working on something with specialised equipment\, skills\, or knowledge – such as puppetry\, singing\, dance\, or any props/technical requirements – please email theatreschool@improvtheatre.co.uk ahead of time so that we can prepare everything we’ll need to support you in the session. \nEach session lasts 3 hours and is capped at 8 places.  \nThe Improv Gym is about improving the skills you want to work on – if you’re looking for something a bit more structured or just want to turn up and play\, why not try our Improv Drop-ins? \nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date from the calendar below.

SUMMARY:Compering and Crowd Work Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 8th February | 11:00 – 15:00\nPlease note: This event is an external hire. For questions not relating to the venue\, please get in touch with Ben Van der Velde.  \nWhether you’re an open mic comic wanting to learn the basics of compering or a more seasoned pro keen to extend your skill set\, join accomplished compere Ben Van der Velde for this four hour workshop focusing on the skills of hosting and crowd work. \n\nIn this workshop you’ll cover: \n* How to unlock your creativity and natural improvisational skills\n* Persona and status\n* How to get at least 5 laughs from each audience member\n* Asking better questions to mine better information and create better riffs\n* Endowing audience members to create fantasy worlds to play with\n* Performing one man scenes\n* How to create a story of the night by weaving together different audience interaction \nWe’ll also look at useful shortcuts for effective crowdwork\, how to deal with hecklers and how to host non-comedy events. All abilities/levels of experience welcome. \n“Before Ben’s enjoyable and productive workshop\, I didn’t feel very confident talking to the audience. Within six months of doing the workshop I was offered my first TV hosting job and I felt prepared and excited for it.” William Stone\n \n“The workshop was brilliant! The four hours flew by. Ben is very generous and has a really positive “can do” attitude towards comedy. I left feeling a lot stronger as a comic.” Aideen McQueen\n\n“I have been doing stand up for two decades but Ben’s workshop taught me things I still hadn’t learned. He’s encouraged me to bust out of my scripted straitjacket and be more playful on stage. Would recommend this workshop to any comic no matter what their level.” Andy White\nBOOK YOUR TICKETS HERE >

SUMMARY:Tales of Adventure presents: Romantic Ridiculousness
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 13th February | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nVisited in the night by a spirit on Valentine’s Eve\, three hapless 30-something friends have been delivered a terrifying ultimatum – if they don’t change their unlovable ways and find true romance by midnight on Valentine’s Day\, they will be lovelorn forever! There’s no shortage of lonely hearts (or single hotties) in the big city\, but is it even possible for love to bloom in such a short span of time? With only 24 hours on the clock\, they’ll have to bust out all their (limited) romantic know-how to succeed. But what will bring them the love they need – dating apps\, meet-cutes\, the attractive-but-grouchy supervisor at work\, hoping a Hollywood actor stumbles into your bookstore to escape the paparazzi\, a fake romance that becomes real? The options are endless\, but time isn’t! \nTales of Adventure is an improvised storytelling panel show with live illustration\, inspired by tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons. Each episode sees a crack team of comedians and improvisers combining their talents to craft a thrilling and hilarious narrative in a different genre\, aided (and sometimes challenged) by suggestions from the Audience. Expect chaotic comedy\, high-energy silliness\, and occasional touching moments amongst the nonsense. \nLike all improvised shows\, content may vary – recommended for ages 14+ \n(Please note: all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)

SUMMARY:The Bareback Kings Valentine’s Special
DESCRIPTION:Friday 14th February | 20:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nFeeling the Valentine’s Day blues? Need an alternative to the commercialisation of romance? Let London favourites The Bareback Kings bring more lurve into your life with their drag king swagger\, tackling the issues of the hour in this improvised comedy show. The boyz are rude\, crude but never disrespecting the ladies. Even when they’re whipping their kecks off. \nThe Bareback Kings are a not-so-regular group of women having a go at being regular dudes. Four women\, dressed as lads\, take the piss out of anything related to being alive in the 21st century—gender\, politics\, Deliveroo\, to name a few. Each show the lads will ask for your suggestions\, and your digits\, to create a one-off memorable experience. \nThe Bareback Kings – otherwise known as Brent\, Dirk\, Gary and Seb – have been riding together since 2017. Proud members of the improv\, drag and LGBTQIA communities\, their raucous-comedy-shows also provoke discussion about gender and identity. They have performed across London\, the UK\, and New York with their unique brand of improvised drag-king comedy. If you like your comedy anarchic\, real\, and with a sock down its pants\, you’ll like The Bareback Kings. \n“Genuinely hilarious” – The Sunday Times \n“Hilarious and raucous explosion…The group have deftly distilled the essence of lads\, lads\, lads…I could literally watch ALL DAY.” – Phoenix Remix. \nWith support from:\nUp The Antics present\, Power Couple. \nSketch veterans (and real life Husband and Wife) Ros and Scott mine their relationship to deliver the best of their couple-themed sketches. \nLeicester Square Sketch-Off Semi-Finalists \n“Brilliantly Witty” ★★★★★ Inter:Mission \n“Up The Antics are guaranteed to deliver a laugh every minute” ★★★★ EdFringeReview

SUMMARY:Performing Improv L2: Approaches to Scenework
DESCRIPTION:24th February – 7th April | Mondays | 19:00 – 21:30\nScenes are the building blocks of improvised theatre\, but there are as many different ways to play a scene as there are improvisers. From emotionally-focused play\, to creating a narrative flow of cause and effect\, deftly weaving themes and concepts together\, or just finding something funny to do again (but bigger)\, how you approach a scene helps to define how it plays out.  This 7-week course delves into improvisation techniques and theory from a range of perspectives to help you stretch your scenic muscles and develop your own approach to scenework. \nA great course for those looking to develop their scenework skills and explore their personal voice as an improviser. \nThis course is part of our Level 2 Performing Improv programme. Completion of Level 1 courses (or equivalent beginner-to-intermediate training) is recommended\, but not required. \n\n \n \n \n \nCLASS DETAILS\nThis course consists of 7 sessions that last for 2.5 hours each\, and will be taught by one or two of our experienced facilitators. Places are capped at 12. Like all our Performing Improv courses\, the 7th week includes a showcase performance to a supportive audience of friends\, family\, and fellow students. \nIf you have any accommodations or access needs\, questions\, feedback or concerns about these classes\, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at theatreschool@improvtheatre.net.

SUMMARY:‘The Mastery of Self Expression’ Taster Session
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1st February | 10:00 – 12:45\nWednesday 26th February | 19:00 – 21:45\nThis event is run by an external organiser and is not part of the BIT’s regular Theatre School programme.  \n‘Take The Stage As Yourself.’ \nCome meet the facilitators and find out about this uniquely powerful workshop.  Equal parts performance masterclass and personal development course\, The Mastery of Self Expression is an intensive weekend workshop that will help you discover how to come deeply into relationship with yourself and your ‘audience’ – whether that’s formally on stage or informally in your everyday interactions. \nA thrilling and affecting experience\, The Mastery is not about technique but about a quality of presence – the ability to risk being authentically who you are in the presence of others.  It will help you grow your capacity for creative and spontaneous self-expression\, connecting you to your passions and enabling you to discover who you really are behind the ‘masks’ we all wear. \nCreated by producer Dan Fauci in 1977\, The Mastery was originally based on training actors but quickly passed into the public arena\, running continuously around the world since then; thousands of people from all walks of life have benefited from it.       \n‘Would highly recommend to all actors/improvisers and anyone who wants to get more and more comfortable with being their true selves on stage.’  – Mastery workshop participant \nPlease note: This is a Taster Session. The workshop itself will take place April 11-13th offsite in south Bristol.  For info:  Facebook MasteryBristol \nAlthough free\, booking is essential as places are limited. \n\n\nAbout the Instructor\nJan Castle\nJan is a highly experienced coach and facilitator\, the creator/co-creator of numerous self-development and creativity workshops including Live your Dream\, The Write Space\, Voicing your Purpose and The Space (follow-up to The Mastery). \nShe first became interested in our ability to create and ‘be’ without limitation when exploring the Art of The Fool with Frankie Anderson and Eastern spiritual traditions. \n“I am fascinated by the ‘edge’ I experience in myself and others\, the scary and thrilling frontier between the version of myself I think is acceptable to others\, and showing up fully in all my wonderful\, messy\, creative humanity.”

SUMMARY:Global Majority Improv Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays | 11:00 – 13:00\n(Please check the calendar below for dates of upcoming sessions)\nThis fun and friendly workshop for people from Global Majority backgrounds is open to all levels – you can be completely new to improv or looking to brush up on your basics and practise improv in a different context. Join instructors Aisha and Kierann to learn and practise improv skills and build your confidence in bringing your whole self to your improv practise\, as well as building links with others. \nWhy are we running these workshops? \nWe recognise that the improv scene in Bristol and the wider UK is predominantly white\, and does not reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity we otherwise see around us. We also recognise that when practising improv there can be a (conscious or subconscious) drive for people to conform to the dominant culture\, as well as the potential for people’s (conscious or unconscious) biases to come up. Facing the latter can lead to additional emotional labour for people from historically marginalised and minoritised groups\, which is\, let’s face it\, exhausting. This workshop will create a space that allows people to practise bringing their lived experience into their improvisation\, as part of a supportive community. \nWho Are these Workshops For? \nAnti-racist activist Rosemary Campbell-Stephens coined the term Global Majority to refer to people who are “black\, Asian\, brown\, dual-heritage\, indigenous to the Global South\, and/or have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities'” highlighting that it is an important reframing because this demographic “represents approximately 80% of the world’s population.” The term also includes Latine\, Arab and Romani people\, Pacific Islanders\, and other biracial or multiracial people mixed with one or more of the above-listed. \nWe welcome Global Majority community members from all walks of life in this space\, including people who\, on first appearance\, may not feel or visually believe they belong in the Global Majority community. All members of the Global Majority are welcome to these sessions\, regardless of their appearance. The group has been created as a space for those who can sometimes feel othered in predominantly white spaces\, and we welcome you to self-identify if it is right for you.

\nTo book your ticket\, simply choose your preferred date below.

SUMMARY:Double Bill: Night Fictions & The Bish Bosh Bash and Friends Presents: Story Smash!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 22nd March | 20:00 – 22:00\n(Doors open 19:30)\nA double bill of interactive storytelling \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, David Puck Drag will no longer be performing as part of this Saturday’s double bill. We’re pleased to welcome The Bish Bosh Bash and Friends Presents: Story Smash! in their place. They’ll bring 4 unique stories to life before your very eyes\, and then it’s up to you to decide which one gets an ending! \nNight Fictions will still be performing their surreal\, second-person storytelling adventure\, weaving improvised tales with music and soundscaping to create darkly fun and mysterious worlds. \nNight Fictions\nNight Fictions are a trio from Bristol consisting of Andrew Weildon-Denis\, Lee Abecasis and Joe Urwin\, that have been creating together for over 5 years. They combine voice acting and storytelling with an eclectic mix of music and soundscaping\, to create a darkly fun and mysterious experience. \nNight Fictions predominantly write and release in audio drama form\, and use improv in the early stages to find ideas. The live show is totally improvised using your suggestions to weave the story world. Follow the dream-like adventures of our main character\, “you”\, way out into the shadowy long grass\, where singing animals and entities and uncanny characters reside. \nThe Bish Bosh Bash and Friends Presents: Story Smash\nFour directors\, only one winner. Using your suggestions our directors will create 4 unique\, never-seen-before stories before your very eyes. The catch? You only get to see the end of one! You decide who makes it to the end\, and ultimately which director goes home with the glory!
