Megazord Script Submission | Improv Double Bill | July

In anticipation of Bristol supergroup Megazord performing at our next Improv Double Bill, John T McInnes (MEng) has written this accurate script representing how the group came up with the idea. He's thinking of submitting it to Cannes, so here's a sneak peak before it blows up!

FADE IN:

CHYRON: "Initiate Megazord sequence! Megazord Battle Mode!" – Ancient Proverb

INT. BRISTOL IMPROV THEATRE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT – NIGHT

We open in a smoke filled basement, 12 silent improvisers are looking at the ground. The whole
team showed up for this rehearsal, so it must be important. They look stressed. In the background is a whiteboard illustrating many complicated improv formats, they look more like math equations.

PHILIP breaks the silence.

PHILIP: Look, I'm not TRYING to be difficult but if this show doesn't have Sandra Bullock in it, I'm out.

MAEVE lunges from her seat and attempts to strangle Philip.

MAEVE: IF YOU MENTION SANDRA BULLOCK ONE MORE TIME I'LL KILL YOU!

The group, in a moment of brilliant group-mind, support this pattern and all begin fighting each other.

TIM gets THEO into a headlock and starts ripping his hair out. ANNA has grabbed GALLAGHER'S tongue and is pressing staples into it. MICKY and JESS are both hitting each other with large frying pans. SAM is in the foetal position on the ground crying. PAIGE is providing invaluable tech support by repeatedly flicking the lights on/off between each hit.

MCINNES brings out a gun and fires into the roof of the BIT, causing serious damage that can
only be repaired with your donations!

MCINNES: LISTEN, PLEASE! Now I've promised Caitlin we would develop a show format IN THE ROUND…

McInnes draws a circle on the whiteboard as he says this, believing it will illustrate something.
It really doesn't.

MCINNES: Using both of our teams, LAST DAY ON EARTH and JAZZ POLICE. We need to agree on a form!

At this prompt GLEN, the only member who didn't engage in the big group fight, starts talking.

GLEN: Well, why don't we just use that music video for REM's Imitation of Life? Remember that song? It was the sound of the summer in 2001 and really gave REM a chart boost after drummer Bill Berry quit.

The whole room look at Glen closely. He really looks like someone but nobody can recall who. It is REM singer MICHAEL STIPE, except he has a pencil-thin moustache so no one in MEGAZORD can quite place him.

GLEN (SECRETLY MICHAEL STIPE): Imitation of Life's video had this great premise where they slowly scan around a large busy scene, a party, and show all of these short sub-scenes that are are subtly interacting with each other. That'd be a fun thing to perform in the round at the BIT. Here, I'll show you the video.

"Glen" gets out his laptop and pulls the video up on Youtube. We see from their faces…this might work!

MONTAGE:

INT. STAG & HOUND PUB REHEARSAL ROOM – NIGHT

We see a series of clips here interspersed with a calendar slowly crossing out days towards 26th JULY.

#1: We see the group happily yelling the theme tune to Wallace & Gromit as they do "the floss"
#2: We see the group deep in thoughtful discussion about a run-through that took place in a tent.
#3: We see DEVIN, an American improviser, giving them a large list of helpful notes.

EXT. BRISTOL IMPROV THEATRE – 26th JULY 7PM

We see the whole team standing outside, there's a massive audience queue waiting to get in. People are being turned away. Megazord look fairly confident, but not so confident that they're full of themselves.

FADE OUT:

CHYRON: "DEDICATED TO GLEN – KEEP ON TRUCKIN BROTHER!"
