Stand-Up Comedy Class with Angie Belcher

Saturday 7th May

10:00 – 17:00

Optional Student Showcase at 19:00

Learn how to write your first 5-minute set using comedic devices used by professional stand-ups. Run by an award-winning stand-up, writer and actor, this master class focuses on understanding your comedic persona, using writing techniques to get the most laughs and writing material about your story. All participants will also have the option to try out their material during the Saturday evening showcase and receive personal feedback on their set.

This 1-day workshop will help you to:

  • Learn why you might struggle to talk about yourself when alone on stage and give tips and tricks for nervousness
  • Find out what your comedic persona is using psychological models
  • Write using comedic devices from one-liners to building a funny story
  • Understand the psychology of audiences
  • How to use your body and voice to command a stage

Who is it for?

This master class is open to both first time performers and actors who would like to learn and try out the art form of Stand-up comedy. This workshop will build on your stage presence to create a comedic version of yourself. The exercises, games and theory will enable you to write your first 5 minutes of stand-up comedy and learn how to perform your material like a professional. You’ll then have the opportunity to have a go at performing during a showcase on Saturday evening!

What will you be doing?

The day will consist of games, exercises, and psychological theory to help you bring your unique personality, experience and charisma to the stage. Above all, the day will inspire you to be a better and more confident communicator.  The workshop aims to be fun and practical as well as giving you a new found love of talking about your life. Everyone will get a chance to write and present their set as well as receiving personal feedback.

Participants will also be given the opportunity to put into practice what they’ve learnt during the day at a stand-up comedy showcase that evening. The first half of the evening will be a safe and supportive space for students to try out their carefully crafted 5-minute sets, followed by our brilliant headliner act Sam Williams after the interval.
