Being a Difficult Woman*

Saturday 5th March
10:00 – 12:00

Do you catch yourself apologising all the time?

Are you scared to speak up in meetings, rehearsals or social situations?

Are you scared of being called, or have you ever been called a ‘Difficult Woman?’

In this two hour exploratory session, we embrace the term. Using a combination of discussion, personal reflection,  improv games and exercises, we will build a Difficult Woman toolkit to help us practice:

  • Expressing our views
  • Vocally supporting other women and oppressed groups
  • Saying no and respecting when others’ set their boundaries

In the words of Audre Lorde:

‘Our speaking out will irritate some people, get us called bitchy or hypersensitive and disrupt some dinner parties. And then our speaking out will permit other women to speak, until laws are changed and lives are saved and the world is altered forever.

Next time, ask: What’s the worst that will happen? Then push yourself a little further than you dare. Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it’s personal. And the world won’t end.

And the speaking will get easier and easier. ‘

Feedback from attendees

‘An empowering workshop in helping you reclaim/use your power through improvisation’

‘Awesome. Well structured, superbly led and very worthwhile.’

Fun activities focussing on key areas where we struggle as women and get in our own way‘

*This event is for all cis and trans women, as well as non-binary people who are comfortable in a space which centres the experience of women.

This year, for International Women’s Day, we’re inviting audiences to donate for local social enterprise Houria. Houria are a catering company who offer training, safe employment and a sense of belonging to migrant women, who are often female survivors of slavery. They are anti-slavery and anti-racist educators, raising awareness about these issues in Bristol and beyond. Support them by making a donation or ordering a delicious Friday Feast: https://www.houria.co.uk
