Tuesday 1st December
19:00 – 20:30
We all know the toxic effects of the patriarchy on women, but what about the pressure it puts on men?
Barack Obama says ‘Life became a lot easier when I simply started being myself.’
This is a class about freeing men from the expectations and limiting beliefs that the patriarchy puts them under.
In this taster session of the upcoming 8-week course, we’ll use improv exercises, reflection & discussion to help explore some of the practical ways we can begin to dismantle & challenge some of the invisible social pressures of the patriarchy.
In this class, we’ll explore:
- Active listening
- Being an ally: speaking up for members of oppressed groups
- Expressing boundaries and respecting when others express boundaries
‘It’s easy to absorb all kinds of messages from society about masculinity and come to believe that there’s a right way and a wrong way to be a man. But as I got older, I realised that my ideas about being a tough guy or cool guy just weren’t me. Life became a lot easier when I simply started being myself.’ – Barack Obama
‘We need men to speak out. We need to raise the bar a little higher.’ – Jackson Katz

Places are capped at 10. No improv experience is needed but please note that we will be using improvised role play scenarios as part of the learning.
Each class will be followed by optional social chat.
