10th March – 14th April
Wednesdays | 19:30 – 21:00
In this course, we’ll begin the journey of the actor. A 6-week experience of a professional acting studio. Students can expect to gain a grounding in the key principles behind Meisner, which form a clear and stepped solution to the skills required of a modern stage & screen actor.
Students can expect to understand what it means to truly ‘listen’, to be present moment to moment and to experience their work, rather than demonstrate or pretend. We will begin with concrete skill and finish applying the work to both memorised and unmemorised text.
Specifically, we will interrogate the difference between ‘improvisation’ and ‘acting’ with a view to truly question if these parts of theatre are as far away from each other as some might think. We’ll be specifically looking at the intersection between Improv & Acting, examining the idea that ‘all acting is improv’ or perhaps more specifically ‘all good acting is improv’.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Philippe is an acting teacher who is currently bringing his contemporary and compassionate approach to the Meisner Technique to the BA, Foundation and Visiting Semester programmes at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. A graduate of acting training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Phillipe has also been teaching Meisner under the name of Drama Lab since 2017. Phillipe draws from his background performing improvisation with the likes of What’s Your Flavour? & Dinner Party (directed by Pravanya Pillay) & with The Delight Collective (directed by Imogen Palmer). Philippe believes the differences between scripted and improvised work aren’t as vast as one might think.
‘As a teacher… (Philippe) is sensitive, generous, patient, kind, passionate and hilarious…(the class)…brought so much out of me. As a performer, his teachings have put me back in touch with what it is to make art : play’.
‘I feel safe and ready to play in your classes, you bring a clarity to acting that I’ve never experienced before Drama Lab’.
‘This work has given me a path or a way in, to understand what acting actually is’.
‘It’s given me a whole new lens for life, it has changed the way I interact with people’.
