BIG April Show | The Stuff of Dreams | Director Interview with Catherine Murphy

The Unscripted Players will be performing their BIG April show this weekend, with two excellent, brand new improv shows being tried and tested on the BIT stage. In this blog, we catch up with The Stuff of Dreams director Catherine Murphy about the show and her preparations with the cast.

What can we expect from the show?

A colourful combination of bizzare dream sequences and that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart.

How are rehearsals going?

Brilliantly! The cast are a total DREAM. We've been working on listening to each other, liking each other and creating realistic people with real wants in their lives. There is so much depth surrounding a person's wants and needs, and this show sets out to explore and discover all those little details and put them under the magnifying glass.

Dreams help with discovering the wants and needs of the protagonist, because (some say) dreams are our subconscious manifest, so we use them as metaphors within the show. The cast are so onboard with this, and are quick to make links between dreamworld and reality world, and just "get" their characters. They are creating beautiful stories with every run.

What's your most memorable dream?

The weird dream I used to have as a kid, where all I would see was scunching paper really loud and crashy, and then suddenly see and hear gently trickling water. My whole body would feel really squashed and then really light.

What do you think it meant?

I think it was just my muscles contracting as I slept, and the feeling of breathing. Or maybe I needed to pee. I have no idea!

What are you most looking forward to about the show?

I can't wait to applaud the cast after each night for their hard work and dedication to this show, they've been so awesome.

Also, the dream scenes! The cast seem like they are just having so much fun jumping in and creating these wonderfully bizzare scenes, it's a joy to watch. These scenes are so bright and colourful, it's a treat for the imagination.

Also, I can't wait to see the whole thing come together!

I know I've said three things, but I just can't choose! Bring it on!
